Description:
Each vascular surgeon has one full day of operating per week and access to half day lists for ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy of varicose veins. We have a dedicated Vascular theatre for elective and emergency procedures. We have a team of Vascular Technologists who provide a full range of duplex services including carotid duplex, aortic scanning, upper limb duplex for acute and chronic conditions, lower limb duplex for acute and chronic conditions and vein mapping for surgery. Many clinic patients receive a one-stop service with a duplex prior to their clinic appointment.
We have one full time vascular nurse who runs nurse-led ulcer clinics, varicose vein and claudication clinics and has successfully developed our ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy service for varicose veins which is our primary mode of treatment for this condition. He has an active role in Research in the unit and also attends weekly clinics as part of the National Aneurysm Screening Programme. We have a primary Cardiothoracic Critical Care facility for complex cases and non-ruptured aneurysms on Level 6 opposite the Cardiothoracic and Vascular theatre complex and a General Intensive Care Unit on Level 4 which takes our ruptured aneurysms and other multi-organ complex cases. A one hour Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting takes place every week in x-ray which includes all of the Vascular Surgeons and Vascular juniors, all Vascular Interventional Radiologists, Vascular Technologists and one Vascular anaesthetist.
The Vascular Unit at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust is recognised as a Training Centre for trainees as part of the new Speciality Training Programme for Vascular Surgery. As such we currently have one Senior vascular trainee from the older system and one early Specialist Trainee from the newer training system
