Responsibilities:
PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE JOB
Directs and supervises activities within the Department and related patient care departments. Reports to and advises the Medical Director on matters relating to the operation of the Department. Applies current and theoretical approaches to the delivery of patient care.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES/PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

Directs and supervises the activities of assigned personnel in the Department. Performs supervisory functions at the Division Head Level as established by the General Management.

Co-ordinates and exercises overall professional control over the activities of Consultants, Specialists and Registrars for ensuring that sound administrative and professional standards of medical practice are maintained

Provides overall responsibility for all Medical cases in-patients, out patients and emergencies. Conducts regular ward rounds on all patients

Holds consultations on problems from other specialists as requested. Provides recommendation as necessary.

Handles administrative and operational matters relating to the activities of the Division, and consults with Medical Director as required

Performs other related duties such as participating in post-graduate and training program, being available for emergency calls in Consultant capacity and limited first-on-call commitment.

Participates actively in Quality Management Committee and report to the Medical Director.

Ensures that committee and department meetings are held at appropriate intervals and that appointed members attend.

Acts as departmental committee chairperson.

Reviews the clinical activities of the department.

Works independently in accordance with established medical policies and procedures and to highest professional standards.

Directs and participates in the administrative activities of the department and report periodically to the Medical Director with respect to such administrative activity.

Ensures proper referral practices by department members.

Assesses the need for and recommend development and implementation of policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of high quality of professional care.

Actively participates in the organization’s activities designed to attain accreditation by the Accreditation Canada and other appropriate accreditation agencies, and directs all department members to do the same.

Participates in the orientation of new physicians and dentists to the hospital and its administrative and professional requirements as well as to the organizational culture.
