Description:

This is a 10PA post designed primarily to support specialised oncologic plastic surgery and reconstruction at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust which is a tertiary referral centre for the treatment of cancer. This is a substantive post.
This is a post where the successful candidate is expected to have a key role in the skin cancer and cutaneous head and neck surgery and to support the Plastic Surgery department. The appointee will be expected to be involved in all areas of oncologic plastic surgery and microsurgical reconstruction, providing cover where necessary to the existing plastic surgeons and would be expected to share cover of the perineal and urological reconstruction service.
Possession of the FRCS(Plast) and CCT, or an equivalent recognised accreditation in Plastic Surgery is essential, and interest in research and teaching is desirable. Candidates will have undergone recognised specialist training and have experience in plastic surgery oncology including microvascular reconstruction and perineal reconstruction.
Support of skin and soft tissue sarcoma services
This service at the Christie has a well-established multidisciplinary approach to the management of patients with skin cancer. This includes surgery, medical oncology and clinical oncology; enabling the delivery of the highest quality of care to patients. Parallel clinics with oncologists for discussion of complex skin and sarcoma tumours and nurse led support are provided.
The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.
We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.
We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.
Role Purpose
This post is designed primarily to support specialised oncologic plastic surgery and reconstruction at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust which is a tertiary referral centre for the treatment of cancer.

Responsibilities:

THE ROLE WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

This is a post where the successful candidate is expected to have a key role in the skin cancer service to support the Plastic Surgery department and will be one of five consultants. The appointee will be expected to be involved in all areas of oncologic plastic surgery and microsurgical reconstruction, providing cover where necessary to the existing plastic surgeons and would be expected to share cover of the perineal reconstruction service. The appointee will also be expected to provide reconstructive cover for some urological reconstruction. There will be the opportunity to build on the existing close relationships with the other oncologic specialties (colorectal, gynaecology and urology). The appointment will be offered under the New Consultant Contract in association with agreed job planning of programmed activities with the Clinical Director and will include participation in the on-call rota.

Candidates who are unable for personal reasons to work full time are eligible to apply and, if successful, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with Consultant colleagues.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Consultants have access to surgical beds on ward 10 which are allocated according to need. There is a surgical day case unit with facilities for preoperative assessment. The Anesthetic service is provided by the Department of Anesthesia at the Christie by the Clinical Director Dr Pawel Aryunski supported via a SLA for anesthesia with The University Hospital South Manchester. All Consultant Surgeons and Anesthetists with sessional commitments to the Christie Hospital are members of the Directorate of Anesthetics, Theatres and Surgery and in the division of Clinical Support and Specialist Surgery.
The department of plastic surgery at The Christie has effectively two separate roles; one is in the area of resection and management of skin and soft tissue tumours and secondly, the team provides a reconstructive service for the aforementioned group and for patients requiring reconstruction following breast, colorectal, gynaecological and urological surgery. The team also provides key roles within the nationally funded NF1 and NF2 services and the Greater Manchester facial function service and runs a unique clinic for patients with Gorlin Syndrome. We also have a lymphoedema service and work closely with the lymphoedema therapists to provide this.
There is a year-on-year increase in the number of microsurgical reconstructions being performed and the successful candidate would be expected to be a competent microsurgeon and be able to support the four existing consultants.
There are regular plastic surgery clinical meetings, a regular audit programme and a teaching and education programme that the appointee would be actively involved in.
