EPUT is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and passionate Consultant Psychiatrist to join and lead on the PICU, Christopher ward. Christopher ward is a modern 10 bedded male PICU located at the Linden Centre, Chelmsford. The Unit provides expert, supportive, short term, individualised, intensive care for service users aged 18 to 65, resident in Essex, who are in an acutely disturbed phase of a serious mental disorder, resulting in increased risks that require them to be treated in a controlled environment for a brief period of time .
The post holder will also be responsible for the care and management of all patients who are admitted to Christopher Ward until their transfer to locality ward, or (more rarely) discharge. Effective communication with GPs, CMHTs, fellow consultants, the pharmacy team, the Mental Health Act Administrators, the inpatient wards and the HTT is essential. The expectations from the consultant of both clinical input and service development.

You must have full GMC registration and be on the Specialist Register, with an appropriate CCT or equivalent or be within six months of obtaining your CCT on the date of the AAC.

Provide Clinical Leadership and responsible clinical duties for PICU team (10 beds).
Ensure excellence in the provision of mental health assessments and evidence based treatments to all referred patients to the service in line with Trust policies.
Provide input to service development and clinical governance.
Provide provision of supervision to trainees.
Take part in the out of hours on-call rota.
Establish a reliable and accessible work schedule with the team and be readily available during work hours.
Work collaboratively with colleagues in community and inpatient settings concerning the timely care and transfer of patients as necessary.
Ensure appropriate administration and documentation in relation to duties of the post, including recording clinical activities in the Trust electronic patient record system.
Liaise with primary care services as appropriate about patients’ physical health, mental health and social care needs.
Help co-ordinate further support and/or management between different services as service users’ needs may dictate.
Take Responsible Clinician responsibility for the inpatients on the Christopher ward and to review inpatients by way of weekly ward rounds.
Undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients.
Take an active role in management of referrals .Those localities all have their own male PICU provision but in the case of them having no beds Christopher Ward would support them.
Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and management of issues relating to mental and physical health.
Lead on the delivery of high quality care in all settings.
Develop close working links with Christopher Lead Nurse and Inpatient Clinical Director in delivering and developing a smooth care pathway for inpatients in need of PICU input and supporting capacity and flow meetings.
Fulfil Responsibilities as an Approved Clinician and a Psychiatrist approved under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act 1983.
Undertake duties and RC, First Tier Tribunals and Managers’ Hearings, and prepare reports as appropriate.
Liaise with MOJ as necessary, provide required reports.
Actively contribute to the performance targets for the ward, including KPIs and CQUINs
