CONSULTATION COORDINATOR
Location: 11738 Kingsway NW, Edmonton, AB
Closing Date: Until Suitable Candidate is Found.
Position Status: Permanent, Full-Time (40 hrs per week)
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is recruiting for 2 full-time Consultation Coordinators based out of the Provincial Office in Edmonton, AB. Reporting to the Director of Consultation, and with support from the Consultation Department, the Consultation Coordinators will undertake and oversee the procedural aspects of consultation on behalf of the Métis community, ensuring that consultation is meaningful and that there is an opportunity to raise and address concerns about industry and government projects and policy. The ideal candidate will be a team player who is able to engage with the various governance structures of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. They will also engage with citizens, government at the provincial and federal level, industry, and other external stakeholders. The successful candidates must be open-minded and able to look for innovative opportunities to advance the needs of the Nation.
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
- In-depth knowledge of federal and provincial Indigenous consultation requirements.
- Ability to operate in the field to conduct Traditional Land Use studies and projects, as required.
- Strong cultural sensitivity and ability to work well with community members and Elders.
- Exercise discretion in handling confidential and politically sensitive information. Strong political sensitivity.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish strong working relationships with a variety of stakeholders and partners.
- Excellent communication, writing, and organizational skills.
- Ability to identify and respond to sensitive and complex community, organizational, and political issues, concerns, and needs.
- Ability to remain organized, multi-task, and manage time effectively under tight and competing deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to listen, interpret and convey positions appropriately.
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently or in a team setting.
- Strong computer skills with aptitude for using new software.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of a University Bachelor’s Degree in a related field supplemented by 2 years of directly related experience is required. Equivalencies may be considered.
- Knowledge and experience in Métis rights, history, culture, and people.
- Knowledge of the oil and gas industry is an asset.Experience working in government is an asset.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Position will be based out of Edmonton, AB. Other areas within the Province of Alberta may be considered.
- Some travel within Alberta is a requirement. Additional, less frequent, out-of-province travel may also occur, with notice.
- Must have a driver’s license and an operational vehicle.
- Must be available to work evenings and weekends if needed.

Responsibilities:
The Consultation Coordinators will report to and receive instructions from the Director of Consultation and maintain accountability to Otipemisiwak Métis Government leadership. Duties include:
- Respond to notices for consultation.
- Input consultation notifications into project management software.
- Streamline consultation workflow to meet the unique requirements of projects and communities within the area.
- Assist in managing the consultation process and preparing consultation work plans.
- Build relationships and collaborate with other departmental staff in support of the consultation process and the advancement and protection of Métis rights and interests in Alberta.
- Negotiate with government and industry stakeholders for budgets in support of the consultation process.
- Undertake research or studies, including field studies, as required.
- Coordinate and conduct community engagement in support of the consultation process.
- Negotiate accommodations for the benefit of the Métis Community.
- Review reports and other materials and provide briefings and memos on consultation files, as required.
- Prepare updates and reports on consultation files, as needed, including preparing monthly and project-based reporting to be submitted to the Director of Consultation and leadership.
- Participate in meetings, both internally and externally.
- Other tasks as required or assigned.
