Description:

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), a 501(c)(3) lineage-based membership organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American History, and securing America’s future through better education for children, seeks an experienced financial professional to serve as our Controller.
The Controller is an essential role that manages all financial operations, from setting and enforcing accounting policies, to overseeing financial infrastructure and preparing the annual audit.
This position reports to the Executive Director, but will also liaise with executive and committee leadership regarding organizational strategy and financial planning.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or other related degree, is required.
  • Active CPA is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of total combined experience in a Controller role, preferably with at least 3 years in a non-profit or association organization setting and prior management experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of GAAP/FASB requirements.
  • Must have demonstrated experience in establishing internal accounting controls and maintaining policies and procedures.
  • Advanced interpersonal and relationship management skills, especially at the senior or executive level, including the ability to work in a team-oriented environment and work effectively with staff at all levels.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (particularly with Excel).
  • Strong Project management and tracking skills with excellent follow-up capabilities.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, meet multiple deadlines, demonstrate flexibility, adapt to changing priorities, and ability to exercise sound judgment and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong knowledge of local and federal payroll compliance laws is preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Manages a team of accounting professionals.
  • Establishes and maintains a systematic financial reporting system that includes appropriate communication and distribution of useful information to executive leadership on a regular basis.
  • Protects Society assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Accounts for the Society’s transactions in accordance with GAAP; and directs the development and implementation of accounting methods and procedures in accordance with these principles.
  • Provides status of financial condition on a regular basis by collecting, interpreting, and reporting financial data.
  • Recommends Society budgets to executive leadership.
  • Prepare and oversee the organization’s GAAP financial statements and other regulatory reporting (e.g. IRS Form 990), ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Manages annual external audit process to ensure completion of accurate schedules and other information requested by auditors.
  • Manages the banking and investment relationships for the Society, including cash management and investment transactions.
  • Maintain knowledge of all non-profit tax and accounting rules and regulations and recommend adjustments to policies and procedures to ensure continued compliance.
  • Oversee systems related to payroll and benefit payments, procurement, travel expenses, and company-wide policies.
