VESSEL ADVISORS JOB DESCRIPTION - CONTROLLER

Vessel Advisors delivers financial clarity and operational certainty to growth-stage CEOs and their companies. We serve as an outsourced financial team with a focus on strategic finance, technology, and metrics. We provide a full accounting and finance team at a fraction of the cost, and we scale up or down with our clients as they do. We work primarily with professional service firms and software companies in growth-stage who need to develop and implement strategic financial and operational plans. We get to serve as trusted advisors to dynamic business leaders and equip them with the financial information they need when they need it.

The Controller position at Vessel Advisors will support and report to the Chief Executive Officer of Vessel Advisors and informally report to clients’ on a weekly and/or monthly basis. The position involves providing financial services to multiple clients concurrently in a fractional capacity. The Controller will take ownership of the client’s existing financial processes and recommend and implement best practices. The Controller will oversee internal and external staff, as well as client’s staff, as needed. We are seeking an individual who takes extreme ownership over their responsibilities, seeks to provide fast responses in writing and by phone, and will do what it takes to serve and over-deliver Vessel Advisors’ clients.

  • Has experience as a Controller for growing companies with dynamic, ever-changing needs. Do not apply without relevant experience.
  • Is tech savvy. The right candidate already knows how to use cloud-based software and is an expert in accounting software programs as well as Excel and G Suite (Gmail, G Docs, G Sheets, etc). Ideally, the candidate has experience quickly learning and mastering new software. Knowledge in any of the following would be beneficial: Sage, QBO, Asana, Hubspot, Stripe, LastPass, Zoom, DocuSign, Bill.com, Expensify, Shopify/Big Commerce, and Harvest.
  • Is incredibly proactive. They look for things that need to be done and they do them. They don’t wait around until they are told to do something.
  • Is organized. The major need is for someone who is deeply, obsessively organized and loves checklists.
  • Is flexible. The right candidate needs to be comfortable when plans change when things go wrong. Someone with a cool head and a can-do attitude.
  • Is positive. We want to hear what you’re doing to make each day amazing!
  • Is an excellent communicator (both written – email, Slack, etc. – and verbal). 95% of the communication at Vessel Advisors is Slack, Teamwork, or email based.
  • Is a very fast learner. We’ll expose you to many clients in various industries, and if you can’t pick up new concepts fast, you’ll be frustrated.
  • Is experienced with remote working. The right candidate has experience in a remote role prior to Covid-19.
  • Has discretion and can maintain confidentiality. Complete discretion and confidentiality is paramount.
  • Is a perfectionist. Our clients expect precision in the large volume of detailed transactions we manage for them each month.

Support the CEO and other Vessel Advisor CFOs by handling accounting questions, financial reporting needs, month end close management, and client correspondence. Includes daily escalations of accounting questions, weekly management of client processes and procedures, and complete ownership of the month end close schedules ensuring a successful, on-time delivery of financial statements.

Communicate quickly and effectively with various internal and external stakeholders. Build trusted relationships with clients.

  • Guides financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Maximizes return, and limits risk, on cash by minimizing bank balances; making investments.
  • Prepares budgets by establishing schedules; collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data; recommending plans.
  • Achieves budget objectives by scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions.
  • Provides status of financial condition by collecting, interpreting, and reporting financial data.
  • Prepares special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing financial reports; advising management on needed actions.
  • Protects assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls.
  • Monitors and confirms financial condition by conducting audits; providing information to external auditors.
  • Ensures operation of equipment by establishing preventive maintenance requirements and service contracts; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Maintains financial staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees.
  • Maintains financial staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
  • Support additional finance and HR projects as required by the CEO
  • Execute on day-to-day accounting needs, as needed
  • Protects operations by keeping financial information and plans confidential.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing custom and client-specific engagement objectives, as needed.
  • Daily access to a strong internet connection (minimum 100+ Mbps upload, 30+ Mbps download)
  • 8+ years of experience as a Controller or Assistant Controller in Private Business
  • 8+ years of financial software experience (Quickbooks required, other systems preferred)
