Description:

The University of Price Edward Island invites applications to fill a coordinator position to support UPEI Indigenous students. As a key member of the Student Affairs team, the Coordinator of the Mawi’omi Indigenous Student Centre will be responsible for the effective delivery of programs and services to support Indigenous students, with a primary focus on university access and student success. Reporting to the Manager of Student Culture and Community Standards, the Coordinator regularly solicits and listen to students as to their experiences, collaborates with other staff within Student Affairs and works in concert with the Indigenous Knowledge, Education, Research and Applied Studies faculty to create and implement programs and services on campus that support student voices and supports the Indigenization of the campus.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post secondary education and experience is required, though a Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred
  • Three years’ experience supporting and/or working with people.
  • Familiarity working within Indigenous communities is essential
  • Experience working with a diverse student population reflecting the realities of today’s campus including issues of culture, gender, orientation, and equity would be considered assets
  • Experience in leadership roles is essential and experience working on provincial and regional committees would be considered an asset
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the culture, traditions and history of the Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq. People with lived experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the culture, traditions and history of the Mi’kma’ki Territory. People with lived experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of other First Nations, Metis, and/or Inuit peoples culture and traditions is considered an asset. People with lived experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Student-centered individual with well-developed observational, and supportive listening skills.
  • Must demonstrate an ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Both facilitation and event planning skills are required, and student support program design is an asset
  • Previous experience building community is essential. Having knowledge and experience addressing the challenges of student engagement is an asset.
  • Fluency in an Indigenous language is an asset.
  • Experience working in a post-secondary environment would be considered an asset.

Responsibilities:

Core responsibilities for the position will include:

  • Build strong relationships and advise Indigenous students through the student life cycle from recruitment through to graduation, providing cultural, personal, and academic support
  • Actively facilitate campuswide engagement by connecting with Indigenous students both at the Mawi’omi Centre and in other areas of the campus
  • Collaborate with and provide support to the Elder(s) in Residence
  • Collaborate with and support initiatives offered through UPEI’s Faculty of Indigenous Knowledge, Education, Research and Applied Studies (IKERAS)
  • Hire, train and supervise student leader(s)
  • Develop and coordinate Mawi’omi Centre resources and activities to promote a sense of community and belonging for Indigenous students while raising awareness of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and history at UPEI.
  • Design, promote and deliver programs and outreach activities, online and in person, for Indigenous and non-Indigenous students
  • Work in conjunction with academic support team and recruitment team in working with high school counsellors and appropriate community resources that aim to support Indigenous students with post-secondary enrolment.
  • Work with faculty and staff on student engagement and retention initiatives for Indigenous students
  • Network with on and off campus community groups and collaborate on events
  • Develop and maintain accurate documentation and provide statistical reports to support the university’s understanding of the Indigenous student population
