About the role
Please note: While this role is posted as full time, we are happy to adjust the role to part time for the right individual. Similarly, we are happy to make adjustments to the work arrangement from hybrid to fully remote for the right individual.
The Loan Review team is on a journey to increase the value it provides to ATB’s team members by expanding the Business Loan Review team. We are seeking a Corporate Loan Review Specialist who is experienced in lending to mid-market and large corporate businesses via Bilateral and Syndicated credit facilities; ideally in all industries but certainly with a focus on Oil & Gas including production and/or infrastructure and Commercial Real Estate. The successful applicant will be keen to apply that knowledge in assessing the effectiveness of ATB’s credit granting activities and assessing the quality of ATB’s loan portfolios. The Specialist will have a desire to work collaboratively with Risk Management and AoE team members to ensure timely recommendations enable continuous improvement in the effectiveness of credit granting activities.
Reporting to the Director, Business and Corporate Loan Review, the Corporate Loan Review Specialist conducts post reviews of funded loans to ensure the degree of risk has been accurately identified. As a second line of defense accountability, the review of loans is credit quality based, and provides an independent view of the overall quality of the borrower and associated risks.
Accountabilities
The role ensures the control practices within areas of delegated authorities, underwriting, collateral and overall credit quality are being carried out at an acceptable level in accordance with ATB’s credit policies, business rules and sound credit granting principals to ensure ATB credit assets are well managed and protected. The role identifies significant issues, associated impacts and causes which are reported to ATB Business, Risk Management, Internal Control teams and other levels of management throughout the organization. The Corporate Loan Review Specialist is responsible for providing objective assurance via reporting to identify all significant credit risks and ensure they are being well managed and controls are effective and efficient.

You will find success based on your ability to:

  • Oversee the assessment of the risk rating of credit deals, ensuring the rating process was done correctly and loan abided by the credit risk appetite.
  • Oversee & review portfolio monitoring, including quality assurance activities.
  • Prepare reports, which detail findings and recommendations outlining the significant issues, associated risks and impacts, and causes.
  • As a second line of defense function, be able to assess a file through the lens of a credit quality, as opposed to an operational approach.
  • Display fierce and personal accountability by consistently achieving the targets set for timeliness and accuracy.
  • Review and suggest proposed changes to ATB’s Credit Policies, Business Rules and Processes to provide advice on the adequacy and effectiveness of controls.
  • Develops loan review methodology, processes and procedures
  • Act as a trusted advisor to leaders on how to improve the larger credit approval process
  • Driven by performance by identifying process gaps and inefficiencies in Loan Review and recommend/implement changes to address them.
  • Capably apply your technical background by working with various software programs, specifically an understanding of the Google suite of products
  • Develop, maintain and improve loan review data or information requirements/quality.
  • Proactively identify and assist to remediate any data gaps which impact Credit and Risk Management’s ability to accurately and efficiently report on Business Bankings credit portfolio.
  • Create a positive impact on the control environment.
  • Be an all-in oneATB team member and seen as a go-to for team, and a subset of business units within ATB

Skills, experience & requirements

As an ideal candidate you have either experience in, or a natural ability to:

  • Oversee business lending, specifically corporate lending, with a direct lending or adjudication role serving medium to corporate sized business segments, including an understanding of financial statements, loan agreements, and ratio calculations
  • Experience in lending to mid-market and large corporate businesses via Bilateral and Syndicated credit facilities; ideally in all industries but certainly with a focus on Oil & Gas including production and/or infrastructure and Commercial Real Estate
  • Utilize Google based products, and the capability to potentially work with new software
  • Apply superlative verbal and written communication skills with senior audiences
  • Apply strong analytical skills, and be diligent with the details
  • Work collaboratively
  • Self-teach new loan review and credit risk topics
  • Discuss opportunities and dig for information with Loan Review leaders
  • Effectively and autonomously manage relationships with increasingly senior/important stakeholders
