Description:
We are currently hiring an Assistant Controller to join our Accounting and Finance team. Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller is responsible for the accounting and analysis for the Running Room Group of Companies including balance sheet accounts, corporate and store income statements, and full cycle accounting.
The Assistant Controller must have experience preparing financial statements / reports for management. This job is 100% worked in-office (no work from home or hybrid work).

Responsibilities
- Prepare, analyze, and review financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and account reconciliations. Ensure compliance with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Oversee the month-end and year-end closing processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation. Ensure timely and accurate completion of financial reporting activities.
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, ensuring accuracy, proper documentation, and compliance with internal controls. Investigate and resolve discrepancies or variances as necessary.
- Coordinate the year-end preparation of financial statements and working papers for external accountants.
- Identify opportunities to streamline financial processes, enhance internal controls, and optimize efficiency.
- Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to other accounting personnel.
- Conduct financial analysis, including variance analysis, profitability analysis, and cost analysis, to support strategic decision-making and identify areas for improvement.
- Prepare and/or review federal and provincial sales tax returns.
- Correspond with operational personnel to resolve issues as necessary.
- Other related duties as required.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in a full-cycle accounting role; retail industry experience considered an asset.
- University degree in Business/Accounting. CPA designation preferred.
- You have primary responsibility for the timely and accurate delivery of financial statements monthly. You are someone who is ready to roll up your sleeves and prepare account reconciliations, prepare variance analysis, or any other accounting duties as required. This role will spend 50-75% of their time preparing work and the rest of their time supervising / reviewing.
- Proficient at problem solving and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Willingness to work evenings or weekends as required by deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities including experience with supervising / managing other employees.
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge of MS Office including Excel and Word.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Dynamics GP is an asset.
