SUMMARY: A Technical Position reporting to the Manager of Innovation & Sustainability. Primary responsibility is to support the proactive development of an innovative, sustainable, product portfolio that meets both the current and future needs of our customer’s products develop as well as ensure compliance with APC carbon emissions reduction programs, waste reduction, and circulatory programs. This position will largely work to support the sustainable packaging knowledge needs of the technical teams but also facilitate and work with various internal and external teams. The ideal candidate will possess an understanding of the flexible packaging market space and awareness of emissions reduction programs and principles of circularity.
Location: Can sit at any of our APC Locations in Wisconsin, Iowa, New York or Utah.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Support research activities in targeted sustainable focus areas with goal of delivering products that meet and exceed customer expectations for form, function, performance, and optimal manufacturability.
  • Work to optimize, build, and refine the resources and knowledge base of materials and technologies that aide our technical teams in making the best choices for sustainable product development opportunities.
  • Collaborate and provide guidance to the technical and operational teams on sustainable product recommendations for NBOs, proactive product development projects, and other product development activities.
  • Facilitate internal and external business sustainable packaging opportunities with customized proposals and presentations articulating the values of sustainable packaging and emissions reductions activities.
  • Participate in selected sustainable trial activities, both internally and externally, and document outcomes and learnings to optimize choices for new opportunities as well as focus on productivity enhancement and waste reduction.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and other relevant supply chain partners to understand both current and future product / equipment pipelines, where they can be leveraged, as well as work on emissions abatement programs.
  • Participate in sustainable packaging associations and working groups as assigned, with goal of educating the broader team, identifying future packaging changes that may affect our business, and enhancing standards development activities.
  • Facilitate data collection, monitoring, tracking, and reporting corporate emissions reductions activities along with facilitating the information needs of external parties.
  • Support and document submissions to industry standards organizations such as APR, How2Recycle, and other relevant programs.
  • Support customer requests related to emissions reduction activities, carbon footprints, and related information.
  • Support promotion and marketing of APC innovations and activities.
  • Develop a keen awareness of the sustainable packaging market space, competitive packaging innovations, and work to identify market and product gaps.
  • Work with operations teams to reduce waste streams and enhance circularity through recycling or other waste-management programming.
  • Participate in training, embrace concepts of and actively practice the SPOT Safety Program fundamentals to aid APC’s efforts to achieve a zero-accident rate.
  • Attend and participate in all company mandated meetings.
  • Business travel as required.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Bachelors degree (B.A.) in a Technical Field (Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, etc.) from a four-year college or university; or equivalent combination of education and experience. The ideal candidate for this position will have a broad knowledge of the flexible packaging market, awareness of the sustainable space including standard and guidelines, emission strategies, and passion for educating, promoting, and growing sustainable packaging within APC and our customer base.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information predominantly technical in nature and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Skillful in presentation skills both in preparation and delivery is preferred.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
