Job Title:: Correctional Officer
Reports To:: Shift Lieutenant

SUMMARY:

Correctional officers oversee individuals who have been arrested, awaiting trial or other hearings, or who have been convicted of a crime and sentenced to serve time. They maintain security and observe inmate conduct and behavior to prevent disturbances and escapes.
This position reports to the assigned Shift Lieutenant.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Insure that inmates follow the rules, officers monitor inmate’s activities, including working, exercising, eating and showering. The search of inmate’s and their housing units for weapons, drugs and contraband, settle disputes between inmates, and enforce discipline. Periodically inspect the facilities. Officers, for example, check cells and other areas for unsanitary conditions, weapons, drugs, fire hazards, and any evidence of infractions of rules. Officers inspect locks, bars, doors, and gates for signs of tampering.
Officers prepare reports on inmate activity as well as incidents or write-ups. Keep a daily record of all jail activity. Perform two hourly checks on all housing units and inspect all mail for inmates. Officers escort inmates from their housing units to court, visitation, and transport them to other localities. Handle all booking procedures including finger printing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other agencies. Perform any other duties deemed necessary of an officer or by the Sheriff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates for the position of Correctional Officer/Deputy Sheriff must be 18 years of age, high school graduate or have GED equivalent, have a valid Virginia driver’s license, ability to communicate effectively, and the ability to interpret and respond to common situations or complaints accordingly. Any job related experience or knowledge involving this type of work that meets the Sheriffs approval is a plus but not required. Have the ability to cope with a variety of crisis and non-crisis situations firmly, tactfully, courteously, and with respect for the rights of the inmates. Have the ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively when determining proper courses of action to take while dealing with inmate behavior. Have the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, express oneself clearly and concisely while maintaining an effective relationship with other employees and the general public. Have a general knowledge of the care and use of firearms.
