TELUS Health, in partnership with Brock University, is seeking a dedicated and experienced registered psychotherapist or social worker to provide comprehensive on-campus counselling services. This role is pivotal in fostering student resilience, growth, and a positive campus environment. As a Counsellor, you will champion the mental health and psychological well-being of Brock University’s diverse student body. You will provide short-term counselling and crisis intervention, assisting students in navigating their academic and personal challenges, including high-risk behaviors and substance use concerns. By employing strength-based, solution-focused strategies, you will empower students to achieve their goals. Your collaboration with university staff and stakeholders will strengthen the support network for students, creating a safe and supportive environment that fosters their cultural, social, and academic success.

  • Promote and advocate for student mental health and the psychological well-being and safety of a diverse student community in St. Catharines, Ontario.
  • Provide short-term counselling to young adults, addressing various academic and non-academic issues.
  • Evaluate client needs, set objectives, and develop strategies using a strength-based, solution-focused approach.
  • Handle crisis intervention, high-risk behaviors, and mental health emergencies.
  • Refer clients to appropriate community resources as needed.
  • Accommodate both scheduled and drop-in sessions, supporting in-person and virtual appointments from the counselling centre at Brock University.
  • Collaborate with university staff and other key stakeholders while serving as a corporate ambassador for TELUS Health.
  • Manage administrative requirements, including client documentation, managing bookings, and utilizing manual organizational systems for tracking.

  • Skilled in Crisis Intervention: Equipped with extensive training in crisis intervention, strength-based therapy (SFT), cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and/or GAIN-Q3, you adeptly manage mental health emergencies and high-risk behaviors.
  • Analytical and Solution-Focused: You have strong clinical assessment skills and are proficient in evaluating client needs, setting objectives, and developing strategies using a strength-based, solution-focused approach.
  • Effective Communicator: Leveraging your strong communication skills, you collaborate effectively with university staff and stakeholders. You can convey complex information clearly and are skilled at engaging students in both scheduled and drop-in sessions.

  • Highly Organized: With a proven track record of handling high caseloads, you efficiently manage administrative requirements, including client documentation and managing bookings using both manual and online systems.

  • Proficient with Technology: You are proficient with various online platforms and can seamlessly navigate and integrate these tools into your workflow to support virtual and in-person appointments.
  • Resilient and Adaptable: You quickly adapt to changing environments and efficiently manage your time to prioritize numerous deliverables, demonstrating resilience in a dynamic, fast-paced setting.
  • Knowledgeable in Community Resources: You possess an effective understanding of local community resources and can make appropriate referrals to provide comprehensive support for students.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Master’s Degree in Counselling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • In good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers & Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) or Ontario College of Registered Psychotherapists (CRPO).
  • Certification or extensive training in crisis intervention, SFT, CBT, and/or GAIN-Q3 is considered an asset.

Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of post-graduate counselling experience managing diverse clinical cases.
  • Experience managing high-risk cases, including clients at risk to themselves or others.
  • Expertise in developmental issues of late adolescence (e.g., mental health, disordered eating, transitions, relationships & sexuality, substance use, etc.).
  • Knowledge in EAP with both short and long-term interventions.
  • Effective working with clients presenting a wide variety of issues and good knowledge of local community resources.
  • Strong clinical assessment skills with the ability to provide comprehensive treatment planning.
  • Experience promoting community adaptation and integration.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with clients and stakeholders.
  • Effective time management skills to handle high caseloads and administrative tasks.
  • Ability to seamlessly work with both manual, paper-based systems and navigate various online platforms across different office environments.
