Description:
Are you a seasoned leader with a passion for public service and infrastructure? Hutchinson County is seeking a dedicated and dynamic individual to serve as our County Highway Superintendent. This is a highly visible and critical role responsible for ensuring the safety, efficiency, and quality of our county’s highway system.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years in highway management, road operations, or a related field, with significant experience in leadership and budget management.
- Education: High school diploma or GED required; a combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Licensing: Ability to obtain a Class A CDL within 90 days of hire. Must obtain South Dakota Highway Superintendent Certification.
- Skills: Strong knowledge of highway design, construction, and maintenance; intermediate computer and project management skills; exceptional communication and organizational abilities.
- Residency: Must live within Hutchinson County.
Responsibilities:
- Leadership & Management: Direct the construction and maintenance of county roads, bridges, and facilities, ensuring projects are completed safely and efficiently.
- Strategic Planning: Develop and implement short and long-term plans for county highway construction and maintenance projects.
- Budget & Resource Management: Prepare and manage the department’s budget, oversee purchases, and ensure financial accountability.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all activities comply with state and federal regulations, including the South Dakota Department of Transportation requirements.
- Public Relations: Act as the face of the county’s highway system, ensuring positive public relations and clear communication with the community.
- Emergency Response: Be on call 24/7 to respond to weather-related and other road emergencies, ensuring public safety at all times.
