QUALIFICATIONS

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a job-related field.
  • Equivalent to two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field.
  • A Master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of Student Services and working knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.
  • Working knowledge of research and interview techniques and the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability and specialized skills to: interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
  • Ability to recognize various value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, great attention to detail, prompt professional response and follow up as well as the ability to exercise discretion and tact in all forms of communication.

Responsibilities:

Under general supervision, the Credential Advisor provides various levels of information, advice and assistance to prospective and admitted credential students. The incumbent monitors individual student progress, performs proactive advising outreach to discuss academic issues and program completion, and supports retention while ensuring compliance to standards, policies and procedures.

  • Communicates with faculty, administration, Commission on Teacher Credentialing and local employers.
  • Evaluates complex records and updates detailed information in compliance with state and institution established criteria.
  • Verifies academic qualifications for initial, intern, renewal and appeal credentials, and recommends to the Commission on Teacher Credentialing for the issuance of these credentials.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
