SUMMARY: Assists Prosecutors in every facet of preparing felony cases and prosecutions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Prepares felony cases for court.
Locates witnesses, victims and defendants.
Prepares court exhibits.
Prepares and serves subpoenas.
Arrests persons on District Attorney Warrants, County Attorney Warrants, and Justice of the Peace Warrants.
Prepares Bench Warrants.
Transports witnesses, defendants and victims.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) with training in basic criminal investigation and two years of experience as a law enforcement officer.
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities, may be considered for current Nueces County employees only.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Basic Peace Officer Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. Valid driver license.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of law enforcement administration, criminal and civil law, investigation and crime prevention methods and techniques, rules of evidence, laws governing custody of persons, general business practices and personal computers.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing including good interviewing techniques.
Ability to draft complaints and search warrants.
Ability to operate cameras and video equipment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other county employees and officials, attorneys, court personnel, representatives of law enforcement agencies and the general public.
Ability to chase and subdue subjects wanted on warrants if necessary.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee needs close vision in order to be able to search for evidence at criminal scenes. Must be able to look at crime scene photos for small details. Employee needs distance vision in order to be able to shoot a handgun from seven yards to 25 yards. Must be able to read license plates on moving vehicles. Employee needs color vision in order to distinguish colors to testify in court as to observations at crime scenes, colors of vehicles, colors of clothing, physical characteristics and other matters. Employee needs peripheral vision in order to be able to go into a situation and be aware of everything going on around. Employee needs depth perception in order to be able to estimate distances when testifying in court. Employee must be able to adjust focus to be able to accurately see people and crime scenes.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. While performing investigations, employee may come into contact with irate or hostile individuals who could represent a threat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
