Job Description:
Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the Instructor is responsible for the delivery and student evaluation of the assigned course as described in the curriculum/course outline. Instructors are responsible for preparing materials that fulfil the course learning outcomes, planning lessons, developing assignments and exams that reflect the integrated nature of the curriculum. Children Mandarin courses are once a week (2.5 hours) for 16 Saturdays.

Course Preparation, delivery, and administrative duties

  • Develops and/or revises curriculum in consultation with the Program Coordinator as required
  • Updates the course structure, teaching methods and evaluation tools as necessary
  • Selects and applies appropriate resources to enhance curriculum delivery
  • Delivers the curriculum in accordance with the course outline
  • Maintains a comprehensive and current knowledge of assigned subject areas
  • Facilitates the achievement of course learning outcomes and the educational goals of the students
  • Creates an environment conducive to purposeful learning and positive interaction
  • Monitors student performance and provides constructive feedback to the students throughout the duration of the learning process
  • Records student attendance
  • Ensures that all furniture and equipment in a classroom is returned to its original position at the end of class
  • Administers the Course Evaluation Form by the students according to stated procedures
  • Submits reports and records, including final grade breakdown, timesheets and attendance registers on time and in accordance with prescribed procedures
  • Input final grades into Langara’s student management system within 10 business days of the final class/exam.
  • Sets and models a high standard of professional behaviour and appropriate appearance
  • Adheres to the Policies and Procedures of Langara College
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with administrators, peers, support staff, students and the community at large
  • Participates in scheduled meetings and appropriate college-related activities as requested by the Program Coordinator.

Qualifications Required

Education & Experience

  • A Master’s Degree in appropriate discipline from an accredited university or license/designation in related field. In some programs Bachelor degree in related discipline is acceptable.
  • Specialized training or exposure to program area for which the position is responsible.
  • Native fluency in Mandarin Chinese language.
  • Teaching experience in a similar course to children in a school or similar institution recommended.
  • Experience in developing course materials/curriculum
  • Sound knowledge of contemporary children or adult education principles.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written in Chinese Mandarin.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with administrators, peers, support staff, students and the community at large.
  • Ability to exercise a high level of initiative and responsibility.
  • Ability to use tact and discretion to deal with or settle complex requests or complaints.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people who have limited Mandarin/English language proficiency.

Salary: Hourly wage may vary depending on position or experience.
