TITLE: CULTURAL ORIENTATION INSTRUCTOR

Reports To: Education Director
Pay: $51,292.80-$61,551.36; Full-time, exempt position
Office Hours: Monday – Friday; 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Evening and weekend hours as needed.

POSITION SUMMARY

YMCA International Services is a unique branch of the YMCA of Greater Houston that seeks to meet the needs of Houston’s significant refugee and immigrant communities. We provide comprehensive programs that focus on building human assets and fostering self-sufficiency. The Cultural Orientation Instructor will be responsible for creation, management, and delivery of culturally centered instruction, and instructional materials to clients, volunteers, and YMCA International Services staff.

REQUIREMENTS

  • English speaker with proficiency in Dari or Pashto
  • Degree in Education, Communication, History, or Social Sciences (or related field) preferred
  • Proven Research & Writing skills
  • Ability to create and manipulate documents and databases
  • Extensive experience with international populations
  • Texas Driver’s License; clean driving record; own vehicle; and applicable auto insurance

Responsibilities:

DUTIES /RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include:

  • Researching and developing a culturally responsive curriculum for adults.
  • Teaching cultural proficiency to newly-arrived refugees, and other vulnerable populations.
  • Organizing hands-on experiences to teach students specific skills, including but not limited to those outlined in the Cooperative Agreement.
  • Fostering ties between the clients, YMCA, and community leaders
  • Identifying outreach/recruiting opportunities and providing presentations to community groups
  • Coaching clients one on one and in group settings on cultural acquisition skills
  • Assisting case managers with specific educational interventions
  • Using online databases daily to organize data
  • Reporting suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations; following mandated abuse and incident reporting requirements.
  • Meeting timelines and deadlines related to supporting systems and employee compliance.
  • Welcoming new refugees with occasional airport pick-ups and occasional food distribution.
  • Completing other duties as assigned.

The Cultural Orientation Instructor is responsible for the following:

  • Leading 15 – 20 instructive seminars/ month
  • Creating and maintaining instructional materials and modules
  • Documenting and reporting program participation with case notes and client follow u
