The Office of Indigenous Engagement in the Office of the Provost & VP Academic invites applications for a Cultural Program Assistant. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 12 months(based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position is part of the Office of Indigenous Engagement and reports to the Operations Manager with day-to-day guidance provided by the Specialist Cultural Protocols. The incumbent will work closely and collaboratively with other team members and will assist with: special projects related to cultural protocol; stewardship of the ii’ taa’poh’to’p Tipi (May-September) and other cultural gifts; planning of special cultural events, and the coordination of special requests for knowledge keepers to be engaged in teaching, learning, and cultural event planning.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Support the stewardship of the ii’ taa’poh’to’p Tipi which will include tipi workshop training, tipi set-up/take down with the recruitment of trained volunteers for tipi set-up and take downs through Better Impact.
  • Liaise with risk management and facilities staff to ensure compliance and coordination of tipi use.
  • Supporting the respectful inclusion of traditional knowledge keepers and coordination of cultural protocols and gifting for special events and ceremonial activities.
  • Liaising with Indigenous Elders/Traditional Knowledge Keepers for the purpose of inclusion in special events, ceremony, teachings, and presentations.
  • Support the volunteer program for the Office of Indigenous Engagement utilizing software programs, such as Better Impact for special events and student engagement.
  • Prepares and ensures cultural protocol items (cloth, tobacco, blankets) are available for upcoming events.

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completed a post-secondary program in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is considered.
  • Working understanding of ii’ taaâ’poh’to’p, UCalgary’s Indigenous Strategy content, visionary circles and related 27 recommendations.
  • Experience working with Indigenous Elders and/or Traditional Knowledge Keepers.
  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), Internet Skills, MS Teams, Zoom and Better Impact.
  • Familiarity and/or work experience with the Indigenous organizations.
  • Experience facilitating workshops.
  • Basic working knowledge of organizational structure of the University of Calgary.
  • Knowledge about Indigenous peoples, cultures, and history.
  • Knowledge about regional Indigenous cultural protocols.
  • Experience within Indigenous programs, communities, or organizations.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and accurately perform work.
