We’re looking for a Data Engineer to join our team at Veygo!
About Veygo
Veygo was founded 6 years ago – part of the pioneering incubation venture ‘Admiral Pioneer’ - created to seed and launch exciting scale ups to disrupt existing marketplaces.
Veygo has so far seen an impressive 50% YoY growth. We currently provide our customers with temporary and learner car insurance - products designed to make life easier for those wanting to share or borrow cars, insure their own car for a short amount of time, or for people learning to drive.
What makes Veygo different?
- We’re building flexible policies for learner drivers and people looking to share cars – whether owned or borrowed.
- Veygo provides comprehensive cover to those customers, meaning that the car owner’s existing insurance policy and no claims bonus is safe if the person borrowing the car has an accident.
- All Veygo’s insurance is available by the hour, day, week or month and customers can get a quote in minutes.
- All backed by Admiral, voted Best UK Car Insurance Provider six years in a row by The Personal Finance Awards.
Whilst our mission today is to put people in control of their own journey our ambition is to create a youth lifestyle brand that take us beyond car insurance. Disruption is in our DNA and we’re always relentlessly looking for collaborative self-starters and innovators with the desire to challenge how we do things today; to push the boundaries and drive us through our onward growth journey. Veygo’s culture is vibrant, open, creative, and disruptive.
About the role
Our engineer goals are to be full-stack: we break down silos and empower our teams to work across the entire data landscape. A typical day as a Data Engineer could mean optimizing ETL pipelines in Matillion, designing efficient data models in Snowflake, or working with AWS S3 to manage and effectively use source data.
We’re a tech start-up, not an established insurance brand - this means the pace is fast, the days are varied, but the work is energetic and very rewarding. Expect to collaborate closely with software engineers, analysts, and business teams across marketing, claims and finance to name a few.
Main duties
- Provide technical guidance in data architecture, pipeline design, and optimization to ensure robust, scalable data solutions.
- Build and maintain ETL/ELT processes, ensuring efficient data ingestion and transformation.
- Develop and optimize data models to support analytics, reporting, and real-time decision-making.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure data is a core part of product development, not an afterthought.
- Improve data observability and quality, implementing best practices for monitoring, logging, and lineage tracking.
- Champion best practices such as automated testing, continuous deployment, and efficient data governance.
- Support production data pipelines, troubleshooting issues and optimizing performance.
- Deploy and maintain cloud-based data infrastructure, ensuring security and scalability.
- Create dashboards and reports to enable data-driven decision-making across the business.
- Share knowledge through pair programming, show-and-tell sessions, and mentoring junior engineers.
What We’re Looking For
- Proven experience in a data engineering role, we work with Snowflake, Matillion, and Tableau primarily.
- Strong SQL skills and experience in designing efficient data models.
- Experience working in cloud environments (we use AWS).
- Knowledge of data warehousing best practices and ETL/ELT methodologies.
- Ability to work cross-functionally with engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Experience with Python or other scripting languages.
- Ability to break down complex data problems and optimize performance.
- Willingness to mentor junior engineers or work in a paired programming environment.
- Deep understanding of ETL/ELT best practices, data governance, and security.
Please note: this is a hybrid role based in our Cardiff office once-twice a week.
Salary, Benefits and Work-Life Balance
At Admiral, we are proud to be a diverse business where we put our people and customers first. We have great benefits to ensure employees have a great work-life balance; it’s one of the reasons we’re consistently voted one of the Sunday Times Best Big Companies to Work For in the UK.
All colleagues will receive 33 days holiday (including banks holidays) when they join us, and this will increase with length of service, up to a maximum of 38 days (including banks holidays). You also have the option to buy or sell up to five days of annual leave in addition to your allocation.
