About us
The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) provides fire prevention, preparedness and response services to fire in the built and landscape environments, as well as scientific and specialist capabilities to Queensland communities. The QFD provides a multi-hazard emergency response, including road crash rescue, bushfire, hazardous material, technical and vertical rescue, severe weather incidents, remote and swiftwater rescue, and provides a number of functions supporting community safety outcomes.
The department encompasses Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR), Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ), as well as the broader department which work together to pre-empt, prevent, mitigate and manage the consequences of fires and other emergencies on Queensland communities and support our large volunteer membership across the state.
The QFD is an organisation that is focused on reframing the department’s relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities, and organisations through the Path to Treaty, Closing the Gap and building our cultural capability.
Purpose of the role
Strategic Intelligence and Planning is responsible for the design, development and implementation of best practice approaches, frameworks and guidelines for organisational strategy and ensures compliance with legislative requirements and alignment to government policy. The Analytics team works closely with internal and external stakeholders to support alignment of strategic planning and thinking, leads strategic foresight initiatives, including environment and horizon scanning that supports and informs business intelligence to support and enhance decision making and ensure QFD is able to prepare and respond to changes in the broader disaster and emergency management environment.
Reporting to the Executive Manager, you will be a key member of the team delivering Analytics and Business Intelligence (BI) solutions that support business performance management and enable the delivery of BI capabilities to guide strategic decision making. You will be responsible for undertaking effective information gathering and data analysis and translating these requirements into data models and structures to enable effective delivery of business intelligence products. You will also manage the technical environments to create and deliver data solutions and provide technical support services for analytical and BI software tools and services.

  • Highly developed skills with the following software / technologies to analyse, provide technical direction, standardisation, and professional advice: Cloud platforms (e.g., Amazon Web Services, Azure),
  • Relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL)
  • Data warehousing (e.g. Azure DB, SQL Server)
  • ETL/ELT software
  • Structured Query Languages -SQL
  • Cloud-enabled BI / visualisation software (e.g. PowerBI)
  • Programming languages (e.g. Python/R)
  • RESTful web APIs
  • Geographic Information Systems (e.g. ArcGIS/QGIS)
  • Version Control Systems (e.g. GIT)
  • Experience in analysing complex datasets and translating these requirements into data models and structures, with strong data modelling, transformation and integration skills.

Your key accountabilities

  • Provide expert problem solving and analytics thinking in the development of dataset processes for data modelling, mining, and production, that enable consistent and equitable collection, access, use, analysis and reporting of data.
  • Analyse and solve complex business problems to provide innovative solutions and architecture to meet business data needs and deliver high quality services and outcomes.
  • Provide technical leadership, guidance and mentorship to team members in the development of ETL processes and programming to enable timely and reliable access to data for action, and ways to improve data reliability, efficiency and quality.
  • Provide expert guidance and review of data products to ensure quality and compliance with architectural and governance requirements.
  • Liaise, consult and collaborate with key stakeholders to develop effective data model solutions to enhance BI products, reporting and data analysis.
  • Investigate alternative data sources and design data models to enhance data analysis BI capability needs of the organisation.
  • Provide strategic advice on the design and implementation of best practice approaches, frameworks and guidelines for performance management and BI products to influence effective decision-making.
  • Research, analyse and interpret current and emerging industry trends relating to the support and enhancement of the technical environment and solutions.
