Description:

Giatec Scientific Inc. (Giatec) is looking for a Data Science Assistant for the Winter 2025 Co-op Term. This is an 8-month term position starting in January 2025. The Data Science Assistant is responsible for supporting the Data Science team in Analytics and Data Engineering tasks such as developing datasets, models, and reports which are used to understand our business and meet strategic objectives. This position provides a great opportunity for university students to gain practical experience in the fields of AI, Machine Learning & Data Science.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Students pursuing a Master or PHD in Computer Science, Data science, Mathematics or a similar field.
  • Programming Languages: Python.
  • Data Visualization Tools: Matplotlib, Seaborn, Plotly.
  • Machine Learning Libraries: Scikit-Learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch.
  • Data Manipulation Tools: Pandas, NumPy, Excel.
  • Database Systems: SQL, NoSQL databases (like MongoDB).
  • Collaboration Tools: Git, JIRA, Slack.
  • Have an interest in, understanding of, or experience with Agile development methodology.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication with the ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team environment.
  • Good critical thinking skills – conceptualizing, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating.
  • Self-study and ready to learn new things.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in building and testing statistical models, such as regression models, classification models, or clustering algorithms.
  • Use machine learning libraries (like Scikit-Learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch) to create, train, and evaluate models under the guidance of senior data scientists.
  • Perform feature engineering to improve model accuracy and efficiency.
  • Assist in gathering data from various sources such as databases, APIs, or third-party tools.
  • Perform data cleaning and preprocessing, including handling missing data, removing duplicates, and normalizing or transforming data to make it suitable for analysis.
  • Work with different data formats (CSV, JSON, SQL, etc.) and tools for data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL).
  • Continuously learn new tools, techniques, and best practices in data science.
  • Participate in training sessions, workshops, or internal knowledge-sharing events.
  • Seek mentorship and guidance from senior data scientists and other team members to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Assist in creating dynamic visualizations and dashboards to communicate data insights.
  • Use visualization tools to translate complex data into understandable and actionable information.
