EveryMind Mental Health Services (formerly Peel Children’s Centre) is looking for a committed and passionate Child & Youth Worker with an interest in mental health to provide services to children and youth in a day treatment classroom environment. Our Day Treatment Program provides a safe, accepting, supportive classroom environment for children between the ages of 9-13 experiencing serious emotional, behavioral, or relationship difficulties in their school, and often their home and community.
EveryMind is an accredited children and youth mental health centre that provides a continuum of high-quality mental health services to enrich the lives of children, youth and their families who are experiencing social, emotional and/or behavioural challenges. Our services are provided in a dynamic, client-centred environment that values respect and inclusion, collaboration, learning, innovation and accountability.
Working within a multi-disciplinary framework the Day Treatment Counsellor Assistant assists the primary counsellor within the classroom, supporting the day-to-day operations of the classroom, while ensuring the safety and well-being of all clients within the Day Treatment setting. As this role is within a classroom environment and does not operate during summer, March break, and other school breaks, candidates must be available to work the academic year.
Hiring Salary range - $40,106 - $46,909 over 5 years
Please note that hiring salaries are commensurate with experience and generally start at the beginning of the range.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Child & Youth Worker diploma with a minimum of one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Registration with the Ontario College of Child and Youth Care or eligibility for the same;
- Thorough knowledge of mental health issues and the ability to work from a trauma informed lens
- Proven understanding of a milieu environment and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, within a school setting;
- Strong oral and written communication skills, time management and critical thinking skills with a strong understanding of role boundaries;
- Ability to respond to and support client’s unique mental health needs, within a therapeutic environment, in the context of a multi-disciplinary treatment plan and an integrated school setting;
- Availability to work some late afternoons and evenings at times to accommodate meetings and family reviews;
- Availability to work the academic year, as the position is in a school setting, the position does not operate during school breaks (March break, summer break)
- Knowledge of client care information systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Possess current standard First Aid Certificate and UMAB certification (Understanding and Managing Aggressive Behaviour)
- Have a valid Ontario Driver’s license (Full G Class) and use of a vehicle with a comfort in driving clients throughout the Peel region (surrounding areas) as required
- A Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Check and Pre-Employment Medical screening (including TB test, MMR, TD, Polio, Covid-19 Vaccination), is required;

Responsibilities:
The incumbent will:
- Collaborate with the Day Treatment Counsellor and classroom teacher in maintaining a therapeutic environment conducive to the client’s needs.
- Support the Day Treatment Counsellor in counselling clients individually, in groups, and with caregivers to meet treatment goals.
- Respond to and support client’s unique mental health needs, within a therapeutic environment, in the context of a multi-disciplinary treatment plan and an integrated school setting
- In absence of day treatment counsellor, the assistant will take a lead role in the classroom and develop and implement treatment and social skills groups in support of treatment needs
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all clients within a day treatment setting by taking appropriate action when necessary and adhering to EveryMind policies and procedures.
- Implement and adhere to treatment goals specific to the client in a day treatment setting by being aware of all aspects of the treatment plan and taking the action required.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with members of the multidisciplinary team, the host school/school board, and other professionals
- Liaise with the family/caregivers as required
- Ensure accurate completion of observation sheets and assist with maintaining all client records and data as required, documenting clients’ progress.
- Maintain current training and implementation of first aid, medications and physical intervention techniques as required.
- Plan and participate in activities for clients
- Purchase supplies necessary for the program and account for expenditures on a monthly basis
- Transport clients as required.
