Description:
To support and assist in the implementation and monitoring
of the Welsh Government funded Designed To Smile Programme.
Providing oral health education/promotion to recognized target groups
in the community and to others in the wider community of health and
education.
Undertake the application of topical fluoride to children’s teeth.
To be aware of the National and Local oral health statistics in order to develop suitable programmes and resources to address inequalities in oral health.
To plan, develop, organize and deliver oral health programmes for health and educational professionals. Provision of training may include theoretical and practical skills. Also liaise with external agencies e.g NPHS and local authorities.
To provide specialist knowledge and advice of oral and public health information to health/education professionals through different forms of teaching, training, assessment and evaluation which contributes to the patient/client care some of which may have special needs, learning disabilities, autism and physical disabilities.
To plan organize and co ordinate activities/programmes for multi agency groups involving oral/public health initiatives.
To encourage, support and advise schools in Oral health initiatives e.g. ‘Designed to Smile’.
To be able to organize manage and plan own workload, to be able to work individually or as part of a team.
Any other duties appropriate to the post considered necessary by the Designed to Smile Manager.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

To have a good understanding of medical syndromes, diseases and general illnesses and their effect on the oral cavity. This will include suggesting the most appropriate treatment depending on their illness.
To have a wide range of experience working within the Dental service to provide a comprehensive advice service.
To adapt oral health advice to meet the needs of the child.
To carry out dental interventions such as the application of topical fluoride to children’s teeth in schools or care settings.
To ensure that all dental equipment is safe to use.
To ensure that all equipment is disposed in a safe manner.
To report when stock levels need replenishing.
To actively promote good dental hygiene.
To work closely with dentists and other dental staff relating to patient needs.
To adhere to all Health Board Policies and Procedures.
To Adhere to GDC Guidelines.
To maintain professional skills.
Communication
To demonstrate and adapt effective communication skills when providing, receiving and presenting sensitive and complex information to individuals or groups.
To work within Welsh Assembly Government frameworks regarding oral health, nutritional and educational guidelines, policies and initiatives.
To effectively communicate with children and where necessary their families regarding dental hygiene.
Provide in-depth advice to schools, children and parents regarding oral health.
Re-assure children who may have phobias relating to dental treatment.
Build good relationships with children to ensure that they understand the importance of good dental hygiene.
Work with schools to identify any specific issues relating to dental health promotion.
Give clear advice and instruction to schools, children and their families regarding any dental issues that may require treatment or monitoring.
Work closely with other members of the Community Dental Service to ensure that the needs of a defined population area are met.
Education and Training/Staff Management
To be competent in teaching to all levels of age and ability and to be aware of cultural and language differences.
Will be required to provide teaching to students in colleges including dental students and colleagues.
To provide clinical supervision when required.
Information Resources
To prepare information resources using computer software to develop, create and update presentations, leaflets and other teaching resources.
To produce detailed records of all activities associated with topical fluoride application, oral health promotion and co-ordinate and assist in evaluation processes.
Finance
To maintain stock control and inform management of depleted stocks and resources and maintain current knowledge of available resources.
Research and Development
To participate in Departmental Surveys.
