DESCRIPTION
The Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta is looking to fill the position of Chair, Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences as of July 1, 2025. Candidates must hold a tenured appointment as full-time academic faculty members in the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta.
The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences has 41 tenured/tenure-track faculty members who are recognized internationally for their excellence in research and teaching. The annual departmental operating budget totals around $14.5 million with approximately $11 million in research funding. The department currently has an enrolment of 202 graduate students, 221 undergraduate students in honors, specialization, and general programs, and 2511 undergraduate students registered in junior level courses. The department teaches approximately 247 course sections, with between 5,000 - 7,000 individual registrations. The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is also home to seven museum collections, five research service units, and state-of-the-art facilities to support the research and teaching mission.

Responsibilities:
Department Chairs oversee their department’s operations, including:
- Strategic planning;
- Guiding and enabling the development and success of faculty members and staff;
- Development, supervision, and administration of academic programs;
- Student enrollment target planning;
- Budget planning, financial management, and oversight; and
- Many other department activities.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline and have a proven track record in teaching, service, and research, including an established funded research program. Applicants must have demonstrated leadership abilities, as well as a vision to maintain and strengthen the department’s excellent national and international reputation. They will participate as a member of teams and committees with other University administrators and staff at department, faculty, and college levels. In line with the Faculty of Science’s strategic priorities, the successful candidates will lead the Department in modernizing undergraduate and graduate programs with industry-relevant curricula; fostering a positive, inclusive, and safe culture for faculty, students, and staff; and supporting research effectiveness, interdisciplinary research, and mentorship of trainees and new faculty members. They will advance the University’s priority of creating an inclusive and equitable environment that seeks to learn the needs of, and value the contributions of, all members of the campus community.
