Description:
JOB DESCRIPTION
CORE FUNCTION: Supports the Regional Fire Chief in the daily operations of the Fire Service.
ACCOUNTABILITY: Reports to Regional Fire Chief
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Controls Emergency Incidents by attending emergency situations and assuming command when necessary.
- Maintains knowledge of current strategic and tactical methods of dealing with firefighting and emergency control.
- Ensures firefighters follow departmental policies and procedures.
- Ensures programs are in place to maintain facilities, vehicle apparatus, equipment, and PPE.
- Monitors deficiency reports and ensures records are kept of deficiencies.
- Liaise with Town and County Staff or other governmental agencies and emergency services.
- Interviews people and takes statements on scene.
- Oversees incident reporting program as required by the Town of Drayton Valley, Brazeau County and The Government of Alberta.
- Assists with inspecting properties throughout the Town of Drayton Valley and Brazeau County to ensure they meet Alberta Fire Code Requirements.
- Assists with the preparation of reports for all inspections and liaises with property owners regarding the reports.
- Oversees assigned departmental inventory and maintains adequate records as part of the asset management system for the Town of Drayton Valley and Brazeau County.
- Prepares proposals for tenders, policies, regulations, and procedures, and submits budget requests for consideration.
- On-call rotation for emergency response calls after hours and weekends.
- Align department goals, standards, and objectives with the training program to ensure they are met.
- Assists the Regional Fire Chief by representing the Fire Service at Town and County meetings.
- Perform other fire-related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Minimum of seven years of experience in an officer position in fire/rescue services.
- NFPA 1001 Professional Firefighter Level 2 Certification.
- NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level 2 Certification.
- NFPA 1041 Level 2 Fire Service Instructor Certification. (able to obtain it within 2 years)
- NFPA 1002 Driver/Operator Certification.
- NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Certification.
- NFPA 1035 Fire and Life Safety Educator Certification.
- NFPA 1521 Fire Safety Officer Certification.
- ICS 100 to 300 (able to acquire ICS 400 within 2 years).
- ICS Position Specific Training.
- Certification as an Alberta Safety Codes Officer (NFPA 1031 and NFPA 1033).
- Experience and ability in working with a fire department records system.
- Skilled in the use of computers and familiar with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to handle and resolve problems and issues as they relate to a paid-on-call fire department.
- Excellent conflict resolution skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work with volunteers and the public within flexible working hours.
- Physical ability to complete tasks outlined above.
- Possession of a current Alberta Class 3 driver’s license, with air brake endorsement.
- Successful security clearance.
