Job description
Deputy Head of Legal or Principal Lawyer
Cheshire Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Service are excited to offer a temporary opportunity as our Deputy Head of Legal Services or Principal Lawyer depending upon the skills and experience of the successful candidate.
We are a well-established and high performing in-house legal department looking after the interests of Cheshire Constabulary and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service. We are looking for a lawyer to cover a period of adoption leave expected to commence in November.

We would like to receive applications from lawyers with specialisms in any of the following areas of the law:

  • Employment.
  • Civil litigation.
  • Policing operations.
  • Civil applications in Magistrates Court.
  • Private prosecutions.

Management experience is desirable but not essential. Those with suitable management experience will supervise 1 or 2 units of lawyers and support staff and would be appointed at as Deputy Head of Legal.
Please see attached role profiles for further information on each role. The Deputy Head of Legal attracts a salary of up to £67,779 and Principal Lawyer of up to £59,586. The successful candidate’s suitability for each role will be assessed throughout the recruitment process.
This role is suitable for a secondment arrangement.

  • 5 years post qualification experience in a policing, criminal justice or regulatory legal environment.
  • Effectiveness in a leadership role including management of staff and resources (for Deputy Head of Legal role).
  • Knowledge and experience of the law and procedures in four or more of the following areas
  • Civil litigation.
  • Employment law.
  • Coronial law.
  • Officer misconduct.
  • Operational policing.
  • An understanding of corporate governance structures in either public or private sector.
  • An understanding of competing political and organisational needs.
