Primary objective
Provide expert advice and support to the NT Ombudsman/Information Commissioner and stakeholders on all aspects of
complaint management and best practice in public administration, freedom of information and privacy protection. Lead and
be accountable for the investigation and resolution of complaints about public administration in the NT and the provision of
advice to stakeholders under the Ombudsman Act 2009, Information Act 2002, Judicial Commission Act 2020 and the NT
OPCAT scheme.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide expert advice and support to the Ombudsman/Information Commissioner and stakeholders on complaint
management and best practice in public administration, freedom of information and privacy protection.
2. Provide superior leadership and direction to senior staff involved in the investigation and resolution of complaints and
the provision of quality advice to stakeholders.
3. Carry out high level research, manage special projects and prepare public reports as required by the
Ombudsman/Information Commissioner.
4. Investigate or review the more significant, complex, or sensitive complaints received by the Office.
5. Build and maintain a culture of integrity and high performance across the many functions of the Ombudsman Office and
be an integral part of the NT Ombudsman leadership team.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven leadership skills in a dynamic environment focussed on promoting accountability, transparency, and fairness in
public administration.
2. Significant investigative or related experience necessary to lead and be accountable for complex investigations in the
Office’s multi-jurisdictional complaint handling environment.
3. Superior oral and written communication skills and the ability to analyse legislation, policies, practices, and procedures
of public authorities and formulate sound and workable recommendations for change.
4. Superior interpersonal skills with the ability to work in constructive collaboration with stakeholders to improve public
administration and individual outcomes for Territorians while maintaining a strong sense of independence in decision-
making.
5. Exceptional integrity, management qualities and knowledge of public administration.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualifications (or equivalent) in Law, Public Administration or Management,
2. Appointment is dependent on not having a serious relevant criminal conviction
