Our Critical Care Services is offering a great opportunity to an ambitious and clinically skilled registered nurse to become a Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse and to develop leadership skills and transform patient care.
You should have completed or be in the process of completion of an accredited Critical Care course.
You will be based in the Critical Care Department at Peterborough City Hospital which is a 16 bed combined intensive and high dependency care unit treating around 650 patients a year. Cross site work at Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon will be required.
You will act as leader and role model to a friendly and supportive team thriving to deliver a high standards of clinical care, ensuring best practice in infection control, while maintaining the dignity and respect for all the patients. You will be expected to direct, advice and support colleagues of all grades, delegate and allocate shifts as well as escalate issues when necessary.
As the role includes night shifts, day shifts and weekends, you should be able to work flexibly to meet the service demands.

You will provide clinical leadership, demonstrate expert Critical Care knowledge and be responsible for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care to agreed organisational and professional standards, in accordance with national, trust and unit policies.
You will maintain accurate records and documentation appropriate to care delivery in accordance with information governance requirements.
You will communicate clearly and accurately with colleagues and shift leader about clinical condition of patients while making clinical judgements involving complex information, within limitations of skills and knowledge. You will work collaboratively and communicate effectively at all times with the multi-disciplinary team.
You will maintain professional relationships and excellent communication with patients and relatives, ensuring there needs are met with sensitivity and empathy. You will conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times, acting as a positive role model to peers and junior staff.
You will promote a learning environment that enables personal and professional development of all team members by the dissemination of your knowledge and skills through education and training.

  • Role model highly skilled practice and interpersonal skills in the planning, delivery and provision, evaluation and supervision of care for critically ill patients and significant others.
  • Promote teamwork and ensure harmonious working relationships are maintained with all disciplines involved in providing patient care.

  • Be proactive in the identification of personal developmental and learning needs. To be self-directed in seeking out and using resources to meet such needs.
  • Work closely with the practice development team to deliver support, training and education for specified initiatives to staff.
  • Ensure that any clinical concerns are reported via the trust adverse event reporting system and are escalated as per relevant escalation policies.
  • Ensure compliance with the Trust’s Health and Safety and Risk
  • Management Policies and procedures; establish and maintain safe systems of work within the department. You have a duty to maintain the health, safety and welfare of staff, patients or other third parties visiting your department or general areas of the Trust.
  • Contribute to establishing and maintaining evidence based practices through own learning and professional updating.
  • Effectively manage own workload within the time and resources available.
  • To undertake recruitment and manage staff retention issues.
  • With support from Band 7 sister/charge nurse manage sickness absence, performance, discipline and grievance in line with Trust Policy as required.
  • Undertake appraisal / Joint Review and Development (JRD) for staff with support from Band 7 sister/charge nurse.
