Description:
The post holder will ensure that professional and National standards are met and will act as a positive role model to junior team members following the nursing and midwifery Council (NMC), Health Professional Council (HPC) and KEVII Code of Conduct.
Responsible to the Theatre Manager you will provide leadership to the theatre by assisting the theatre manager when on leave.
The post holder is a key member of the group Management Team contributing to financial balance within their area of responsibility. The deputy Theatre Manager will also provide knowledge in the delivery of the patient safety and governance agenda within theatres and associated areas by working collaboratively with the Theatre Manager and Theatre Governance and IPC lead.
Theatres at UHCW
Main Theatres at UHCW consists of 22 Theatres. Here in main Theatres, we provide both emergency and elective care and specialise in cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, Urology, Gynaecology, Robotic surgery, ophthalmology, joint replacements, plastic, colorectal and general suregery, in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and maternal health, and kidney transplants. We are also a designated major trauma and cancer centre.

Clinical Patient Care
- Maintain high Visibility within the clinical area.
- Deputise for the Theatre Manager as required.
- Prepare for 6: 4: 2 by identifying under and overbooked lists by working with Speciality Band 7 leads.
- Assist in Datix’s investigations.
- Identify and resolve staffing and skill mix discrepancies by daily work review that may impede patient flow and theatre efficiency.
- In conjunction with the Theatre Manager, implement and evaluate cost improvement initiatives.
- Escalate any issues which cannot be resolved to the Theatre Manager or senior management team in their absence.
- Follow Theatre flow standard work.
- Assist in ensuring the “Five Steps to Safer Surgery” initiative including the WHO surgical safety check audits are completed and assist in implementing any actions.
- Ensure that the privacy and dignity of patients whilst in theatre is always upheld.
- Ensure that any safeguarding issues are raised appropriately in relation to vulnerable adults and children.
- Provision of visible leadership within Theatres, empowering and supporting staff to deliver high quality, safe clinical care and improve patient experience throughout the perioperative pathway.
- Manage emergency situations with competence, taking appropriate actions and utilising relevant policies and protocols to support both patients and staff.
- Work collaboratively with other professionals and specialty groups to ensure patients needs are met throughout the perioperative pathway.
- Act in accordance with professional Code of Conduct.
- Ensure own compliance and compliance of others in regard to mandatory training requirements, awareness of professional issues and own professional development.
- Maintain professional registration.
Operational Management
- Work with theatre manager to support the delivery and achievement of Key Performance indicators and patient Access targets.
- Provide specialist knowledge and experience to support the delivery of improvements in theatre efficiency and utilisation, whilst ensuring safe and effective patient care delivery.
- Facilitate with the Theatre Manager that staff and workforce engage in service improvement workstreams within area of responsibility.
- Assist the Theatre Manager in areas of service development and/or improvement.
- Actively promote an open, collaborative and proactive culture between surgical specialities and theatres, identifying and responding to opportunities that may lead to improvements in efficiency and quality.
- Assist in delivering departmental and QIPs meetings.
- Assist the Theatre Manager in clinical operational management of theatres daily.
- Contribute to the manager of the day rota for the group, ensuring attendance at daily operational meetings and providing two-way communication and support between the clinical groups and the theatres teams.
- When deputising for the Theatre Manager provide advice on proposed ad hoc / substantive changes to the theatre schedule, in particular guidance on feasibility of the proposed change from a clinical and staffing perspective. Escalating any issues arising to lead Nurse for Theatres and Anaesthetics.
- Encourage leadership within theatres which facilitates development, support and involvement of all staff.
