QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Design or the like and a minimum of five years of experience within website, graphic design and/or communications.
- Experience in storytelling, media relations, and digital amplification of mission based programs is a plus.
- Experience synthesizing and disseminating information through multiple distribution channels.
- Excellent working knowledge of the social media landscape, with an understanding of community activation and engagement.
- Understands branding, marketing, and user-experience design and typography.
- Accurately scoped projects to provide timeline estimates and deliver high quality projects on time, and guiding independent contractors (and resources) to bring projects to completion.
- Have led third-party contractors and resources to bring a project to completion
- Specific knowledge of biomimicry is encouraged; new hires without this experience will be asked to complete training (e.g. fundamentals course) in biomimicry.

Skills/Abilities
- Comfortable learning and using the digital tools the Biomimicry Institute uses—with little to no assistance, and willing to try out new technologies and work tools. WordPress, G-Suite, Microsoft Office Suite and proficiency with Excel required. Virtual meeting software, Asana, Box, Slack, and Zoom are helpful. Communications tools such as the Adobe suite, specifically InDesign.
- Highly effective communicator. Can communicate in written and verbal forms and also use visual imagery and websites/social media to effectively communicate.
- Confident, energetic, and dedicated to the mission of the Biomimicry Institute.
- A successful track record in setting priorities; keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills which support and enable sound decision making. Keeps track of responsibilities and meets deadlines and goals.
- Adaptable—manages a constantly changing remote work environment; learns to collaborate with geographically dispersed new team members, etc.
- Clear, direct, and succinct writer.
- Self-sufficient—takes the initiative and completes work without undue supervision
- Strong communication and relationship building skills. Ensures every team member is given a chance to speak. Responsibilities:
JOB PURPOSE
Working under the direction of the Institute’s Director of Strategic Communication, who is based in the US, you will deliver a comprehensive global narrative and storytelling program for the Design 4 Transformation project (which aims to understand the potential and limitations of decomposing fashion waste) and work with external communications and PR agencies, as well as the pilot partners and stakeholders in Ghana, Germany and the Netherlands.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Communications:
- Develop a narrative plan and strategy for the project, together with the wider project team, and identify external communications and PR partners to support capacity to amplify the project across three scales; establishing a global Biomimicry/Circular story, communicating the successes and challenges of the three pilot projects across Europe and beyond, and tailoring stories and narratives in each pilots region/country.
- Identify and create the wider three level storytelling sequence in collaboration with the pilot organizations and a communications agency partner while building on the work completed to date.
- Work with D4T pilot teams to capture stories and messaging for their local contexts
- Contract with external PR and communications partners to create narratives and place stories in alliance with the narrative plan.
- Identify external events and opportunities for the wider project team to highlight and amplify the D4T project.
- Develop media assets including blogs, videos, imagery; engagement of media stakeholder to share content to expand reach.
- Work with the Visual Communications and Website manager to develop visual concepts for program marketing.
- Integrate the project into the wider Biomimicry Institute community and team.
Management:
- Creation of scope of services and day to day management of independent contractor services.
- Establish clear work order guidelines for marketing and PR consultants.
- Establish clear work order guidelines for graphic asset creation contractors.
- Ensure completion of all stated objectives prior to invoice approval.
