Our Design and Production Manager (maternity cover) will lead an ambitious and creative team and play a leading role in how we represent the University externally, delivering on our commitment to showcase Birmingham City University as a destination of choice for prospective students.
Overseeing our team of designers, you will be someone who understands what good design looks like to our target market, and will be passionate about creating jaw-dropping design work to drive forward the awareness of our brand. You will be enthused by the prospect of designing work for the youth market which competes with brands across a range of other sectors – and be equally at home creating compelling corporate materials which harness the University’s ambitions.
Reporting to the Assistant Director Brand and Creative Marketing, you will join a team of equally enthusiastic content creators and communicators, all working together to deliver on the goals laid out in the university strategy. You’ll have an eye for detail and understand what good design looks like, leading your team to create genuinely unique designs which stand out from the crowd.
REQUIREMENTS
- A degree, preferably in Graphic Design or a related discipline or equivalent
- Experience and demonstrable success in a previous senior design role
- Strong experience of using design software, including Adobe Suite – InDesign, CS6, Illustrator, and MS Office
- Strong hands-on experience of design for print and digital, fulfilment and distribution functions, photography, video and how these integrate
- Experience of managing a team
- Experience of presenting to senior colleagues
- Experience of providing design advice to non-marketing colleagues
- Experience of directing photography and other creative briefs
- Experience of developing and implementing brand guidelines
- High degree of creativity and attention to detail through concept development to finished artwork
- Creative and innovative with a strong eye for detail
- Demonstrable ability to motivate, inspire and lead a high performing team

Responsibilities:
- Create first-class design work across digital and print mediums.
- Ensure work created appeals to the target market (visually), stands out in a competitive market and meets the needs of any other stakeholders.
- Act as brand guardian for the University’s brand and sub brands.
- Manage and develop the Design and Production team, delegating work and ensuring all tasks are completed within deadlines.
- Work with print suppliers to ensure quality and brand standards are met.
