Description:
Fortis Mining, Engineering & Manufacturing is currently recruiting a Design Engineer to join our Engineering team in Saskatoon. This position will be primarily office based with potential for short-term on-site requirements. The Design Engineer will be involved with all stages of the engineering and design process for a variety of industrial and mining engineering projects. Fortis Engineering designs, manufactures, and provides onsite installation and services. Subsequently, there is the opportunity to see the candidate’s designs go from concept right through to being put into service. Fortis Engineering services include custom lifting devices, lift plans, material handling equipment, wire rope handling equipment, mine shaft rope attachments, mine shaft sinking and maintenance equipment, lifeline and fall protection plans, and structural designs.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Mechanical or Civil/Structural Engineering degree is preferred)
- Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with APEGS
- 5+ years work experience in a related role will be considered an asset
- Technical background in an industrial or mining project environment is considered an asset
- Basic understanding of AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks
- Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Ability to apply problem solving principles to project challenges and present solutions
- Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong time-management skills, and ability to work well under pressure to meet deadlines
Responsibilities:
- Support a diverse portfolio of projects in scale and complexity
- Ensure projects are delivered on budget and schedule while driving innovation, technical excellence, and quality control and assurance
- Create concept design and carry them through to final design
- Prepare and review technical specifications, equipment lists, calculations, reports, design criteria, and other documents
- Ensure that the designs produced support the method of construction and ease of plant maintenance and operations
- Ensure design engineering standards are maintained and adhered to on all projects
- Review and comment on design documents and drawings
- Mentor less experienced technical personnel with aspects of complex designs
- Coordinate with designers to complete engineering projects
- Assist with quality assurance and management of client expectations
- Provide other technical project support as required
- Coordinate work with other project groups to identify needs and requirements, including interfacing with other contractors and the client
