Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI) is a team of diverse urbanists—landscape architects, urban planners, community organizers, and engineers—united by our shared commitment to building equity, justice, and resilience in communities through design. A BIPOC- and woman-led firm that was founded in 2006, KDI comprises 50 professionals working from four offices: Los Angeles, Eastern Coachella Valley, Nairobi, and Stockholm.

JOB DESCRIPTION

This role combines strong writing abilities with organizational support, making it ideal for someone who thrives in dynamic, hands-on roles. Approximately 70% of your responsibilities will involve crafting compelling proposals for funding and drafting presentations for senior management lectures, etc. The remaining 30% will include general office management and administrative support. This position will report to the CEO and the Operations team and with direction from the business development team. This position supports day-to-day operations of a professional office and occasionally requires availability to work outside of standard hours. This is an excellent opportunity for someone seeking to learn about all aspects of a non-profit and is interested in urban planning, design, and/or community development professions.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree;
  • 2+ years work experience post-university required
  • Experience in creating high-quality materials with Adobe Creative Suite;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Zoom, and Dropbox;
  • Tech savvy with the ability to pick up new skills quickly;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized;
  • Strong commitment to social justice;
  • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds;
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends;
  • Experience meeting deadlines, juggling multiple tasks, and taking initiative to solve problems;
  • Driver’s license and reliable mode of transportation;Fluency in Spanish is a plus.

Responsibilities:

Business Development Writing and Research (approx. 70%)

  • Provide administrative and substantive support for business development pursuits, including grants, project bids, and other proposals;
  • Write and edit business development documents, including tailoring copy to specific RFPs and grants, editing and updating InDesign documents including project sheets, and proposals;
  • Complete required forms for grants and governmental contracting and reporting, and write project summaries;
  • Draft and edit foundation proposals, reports, and other business development-related materials;
  • Assist in creating presentations and communications for the senior management team;
  • Conduct research to support proposal development and donor engagement;
  • Collaborate with team members to capture and communicate the impact of our work effectively.

Office Management & Administrative Support (approx. 30%)

  • Manage day-to-day office tasks, including scheduling, supplies management, and correspondence
  • Perform office management duties such as checking mailbox, sending mail, organizing and maintaining supplies/materials, coordinating vendors and office services, preparing board rooms for meetings, and being the first point of contact for visitors;
  • Provide general administrative support to the CEO and Operations team as needed;
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for IT needs including purchasing/maintaining software subscriptions, software installation, and troubleshooting computers and printers;
  • Coordinate opportunities for office fun and team building;
  • Lead the weekly KDI team meeting;
  • Circulate KDI job and internship opportunities to job boards and colleges;
  • Respond to applicants, file applications, and schedule interviews as needed;
  • Support onboarding of new KDI employees including maintaining onboarding materials and initial technology and accounts set up;
  • Support offboarding of employees leaving KDI;
  • Run local company errands as needed;
  • Other duties as requested by KDI staff.
