Description:

The Dietitian is responsible for provision of nutritional care of the Bariatric, Gastroenterology, and Chronic Pain Clinics patients’, including consultation, assessment and education. The Dietitian promotes and fosters a culture in which the staff manages patients with understanding and compassion. Responsible for participation in departmental, hospital and educational activities, which are supportive of professional and corporate objectives. Adheres to professional obligations as required by the College of Dietitians of Ontario. The Dietitian is responsible for delivery of care consistent with the vision and values of the hospital and the standards of relevant professional organizations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Baccalaureate degree in Food and Nutrition.
  • Completion of a Dietitians of Canada (DC) approved dietetic internship, or approved DC equivalent.
  • College of Dietitians of Ontario, Dietitians of Canada Association.
  • Experience in clinical nutrition.
  • Commitment to provide a positive patient experience with adequate support and positive patient outcomes.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Commitment to standards of excellence and accountability
  • Good working knowledge of relevant legislation including:
  • Personal Health Information Protection Act,
  • Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA)
  • Public Hospitals Act
  • Copyright legislation
  • Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Demonstrated good interpersonal, communication, and organization skills.
  • Capable of coping with a physically demanding workload.
  • Proven good attendance record.
  • Proven ability to attend work regularly.
  • Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiarity with the nutritional care of patients undergoing bariatric surgery would be an asset.
  • Certification as a Diabetes Educator.
  • Experience in an ambulatory care environment.
  • Proficiency in speaking and comprehending both English and French.

Responsibilities:

  • Interviews referred or identified patients, evaluate nutritional status, interpret lab and medical data, develop, implement and evaluate the outcome of the appropriate nutrition therapy.
  • Identifies patients requiring nutrition intervention by interpreting and evaluating nutrition and health status and making appropriate recommendations (enteral and parenteral nutrition support, need for vitamin/mineral supplementation or restriction, changes in medication).
  • Develops and maintains updated nutrition care plan, counsels and educates patients/ clients individually or in groups. Liaises with outside agencies/organizations for appropriate nutritional monitoring.
  • Provides recommendations into overall patient care to maximize treatment and health outcomes, (e.g., drug-nutrient interactions, surgical implications in feeding, and education of patients on self-management, (e.g., medications related to food).
  • Refer patients to other health care professionals and make recommendations to consult other medical specialties.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation related to all patients under his/her care.
  • Acts as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team in designated clinics and medical services.
  • Develops, reviews, updates, implements and evaluates educational material and programs for patients and family members
  • Participates as a member of the health care team as a consultant and advocates for nutrition of all patients through multidisciplinary rounds, family conferences and program development meetings.
  • Provides educational experience and in-service education in clinical nutrition to, physicians, nursing and other health care professionals.
  • Maintains nutritional expertise, quality of care, professional knowledge and skills outlined within the Code of Ethics of the College of Dietitians of Ontario, the Canadian Dietetic Associations and standards of care for the profession.
  • Integrates clinical practice guidelines and evidence-based care and treatment in the nutritional care of patients/clients.
  • Participates in ongoing research projects within the clinical area.
  • Maintains a high standard of personal competence through continuing education and on going critical evaluation of professional experience.
  • Compiles workload statistics on a daily and monthly basis.
  • Participates on committees and activities of national and provincial professional associations.
