JOB SUMMARY

The post holder will be joining an existing Archive team based at the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) in Taunton. The position requires the majority of time to be working from the Archive offices.
This is a new position which has been created primarily to implement, and later manage, a new digital archive which will help the UKHO move towards Archives Accreditation and become compliant with our statutory public record responsibilities. The post-holder will be solely responsible for advice in its specialist area of digital archives, and a key aspect of this role will be developing and delivering a digital catalogue of Archive holdings and a new digital archive of UKHO records. The post holder will be leading the accumulation and cataloguing of the digital collections within the Archive and be responsible for the correct descriptions of records and the placement within an on-line catalogue and digital repository. They will work alongside the existing Archivist whose main role is to work with the non-digital archive assets and the master on-line catalogue.
The post holder is responsible for managing, preserving, and organising digital materials such as electronic records, photographs, videos, and audio recordings according to established accredited standards. Their duties include developing and implementing strategies for long-term preservation and access of digital archives, organising digital collections and metadata, creating, and maintaining databases, managing digital storage systems, and advising users on how to access and use digital archives.
This person will hold a pivotal role within the UKHO Archive and interact with key stakeholders across the organisation.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Working with the Head of Archives to manage access/cataloguing/policies and development of the Digital collection.
  • Responsible for managing, preserving, and organising all digital and physical materials such as paper and book documents, records, photographs, and similar materials according to established accredited standards.
  • Working with staff, accessioning, retrieving, digitising and manual handling will be required.
  • Supervising and providing advice and guidance to staff on archival operations, policies, and procedures
  • Supporting Research, Conservation and Archive Teams in their work.
  • Develop and implement strategies for long-term preservation and access the archives, organising collections and metadata, creating, and maintaining records, managing storage systems, and advising users on how to access and use archives.
  • Maintain and improve the Archive indexes, catalogues, and reference material.
  • List improvement. This includes holdings, indexes, and new datasets.
  • Produce monthly reports as required and provide an annual analysis of trends.
  • Support the development of a continual improvement culture and implementation of process changes as required

QUALIFICATIONS

Post-Graduate qualification in Archives and Records Management/Information Management / Archives Administration
