Description:

As a member of the Communications unit, the Digital Communications Officer works under the strategic direction of and reports to the Manager, Digital Experience.
The work of the Communications unit and the objectives of communications initiatives are defined by the university’s strategic goals and relate to all audiences. These audiences include members of the internal RRU community, current and potential students, Indigenous stakeholders, alumni, current and potential donors, members of the public, provincial and local governments, local business stakeholders, other post-secondary institutions and media. Strategic communications connects people to the university’s mission and value proposition, and works to enhance and amplify the institution’s profile and reputation nationally and internationally.

Strategic communications is a key support function to the Office of VP Communications and Advancement and the executive, with two high-level responsibilities and strategic priorities that link directly to business goals and organizational success:

  • Manage institutional reputation and enhance relevance
  • Strengthen relationships to expand influence and create partnerships

The work of this position is focused on increasing awareness and profile of Royal Roads and its value proposition through digital storytelling and engagement, leveraging compelling stories of our people, place and programs.
To achieve this, the Digital Communications Officer works collaboratively to produce, amplify, engage with and measure the success of content on RRU’s social media and other digital channels.
The Digital Communications Officer supports the Manager, Digital Experience in developing an engaging cross-campus digital community, shaping and building relationships in every department and school at RRU. This includes working with the Digital Experience team to bring together social media content producers across RRU with the goal of unifying and amplifying the university’s voice, and providing key direction and governance.
The Digital Communications Officer supports the work of the Communications unit to protect and strengthen Royal Roads’ reputation and build positive third-party support for enrolment growth and fundraising potential.

Job Requirements

  • A degree in a related field such as public relations, communications or journalism and five years’ experience is preferred. A minimum of a two-year certificate in a related field such as public relations, communications or journalism, with commensurate experience, may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience as a social media communities manager and associated social media management platforms.
  • Advanced writing skills with significant experience in digital storytelling for social media, video and web.
  • Broader communications skills and experience is considered an asset, including: media relations, issues management and message development, strategic communications planning, speech and news writing.
  • Strong inter-personal and verbal communications skills, including the ability to deal sensitively with critical issues.
  • Excellent organizational, project management and time management skills, including the ability to work to deadlines.
  • Independent initiative, sound judgment and developed decision-making abilities.

Additional Information
This is a temporary, full-time position working 37.5 hours per week for a term from January 2025 until May 2026. This position has been evaluated at MPT-C with a salary range of $76,430 (minimum) to $89,820 (midpoint) to $103,209 (maximum) per annum. Employment offers will normally be made between the minimum and midpoint of the range and are determined by knowledge, experience and internal equity.
