Description:
Reporting to the Executive Director, Facilities and Sustainable Infrastructure ("ED"), the Director, Business Excellence and Asset Management ("Director") champions an integrated business approach to institutional asset management, campus planning, and capital planning at Sheridan. This includes providing strategic leadership towards advancing Sheridan’s approach to managing its assets, leading implementation of the Asset Management Quality Management System (QMS) in alignment with the ISO55000 series of standards, leading capital budgeting and monitoring for the institution, and overseeing financial and administrative related matters and processes for the Facilities and Sustainable Infrastructure (FSI) Department.
The Director ensures the promotion of long-term sustainability of Sheridan’s assets while balancing levels of service, risks, and cost effectiveness. This includes engaging asset managers on the evolution of managing assets holistically and following industry best-practices related to asset management policy, strategy, systems, processes, procedures and plans. The Director aligns the asset management framework with Activities Based Budgeting (ABB) and ensures a transparent approach to determining capital investment priorities across the various asset areas including buildings, infrastructure, equipment and technology.
In addition, the Director champions the continual improvement processes for intake, planning, scheduling, execution, and closing of projects and work orders in the FSI department. The Director recommends priorities and collaborates with the Finance team in the preparation, monitoring and reporting of the institution-wide capital budget as well as oversees and leads the development of a long-term asset financial plan that supports Sheridan’s strategic priorities. The Director works collaboratively and proactively to ensure that assets are managed in the most efficient and effective way and that investments in assets align with the goals of Sheridan’s Strategic Plan and academic mission.
The Director participates in strategic planning and collaborates with colleagues within the Facilities team, Finance and more broadly across the institution to ensure effective budget planning, information flows and controls are in place for capital projects and operational activities. As Sheridan’s largest value portfolio of assets, the Director also oversees the team that facilitates the development of a facilities and infrastructure asset management program for an asset portfolio of over $2.5billion in replacement value. The Director works collectively with team members to establish measures and targets for service levels and analyze data and guides the process of prioritizing investment to ensure sound decision making.
THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL ALSO MEET THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:
- 4-year degree in Engineering, Science, Finance, Accounting, Business Management, Resource Management, Mechanical/Electrical/Architecture or other relevant field; MBA or Masters in Business, Finance, Strategy or Accounting preferred;
- 9 years of management experience in asset management, including industry best practices and their strategic applications and asset management business principles, financial management, reporting and budgeting experience, preferably in post-secondary education. (Equivalency to be considered).
- At least one of the following designations/certifications: CPA/CA/CMA/CGA
- Experience in strategic physical asset management (linear and vertical), project management and the development of prioritized, evidence-based capital, operational and maintenance budgets via asset level condition, risk and performance condition;
- Experience leading teams (i.e. supervisory experience);
- Experience providing strategic advice to senior leadership on policy, budget and asset management issues;
- Experience developing, monitoring and reporting on large scale, multi-year capital budgets;
- Experience developing and monitoring capital programs of work in relation to asset management plans;
- Progressive accounting and financial leadership experience including financial accounting, budget and management/cost accounting; thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP);
- Any of the following will be considered an asset: Institute of Asset Management (IAM) Diploma (or equivalent) Professional Engineer (P. Eng) or equivalent, Project Management Professional Certification (PMP), Certified Asset Management Professional (CAMP) designation; Leadership development training;
- The following are preferred: experience with Activity Based Budgeting (ABB); knowledge of funding within the post-secondary sector in Ontario; PeopleSoft experience (Student and Financials); Asset management technology experience such as computerized maintenance management systems and decision support systems.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
- Setting strategic direction and providing financial leadership and guidance to continuously improve Sheridan’s approach to institutional asset management and capital planning through the development of policies, strategies, frameworks, and reports that support asset management planning as well as capital and operating budgets;
- Developing and monitoring institutional capital budget and infrastructure priorities through budgeting and reporting;
- Developing tools and processes to effectively monitor project budgets and liaising with faculties to provide information related to capital budget management;
- Providing leadership, planning and development of facilities asset management quality management system, program, strategies and plan to establish measures/targets for service levels and performance and recommended actions for facilities assets;
- Identifying short, medium and long-term investment needs and detecting short-falls and associated risks;
- Providing leadership, development, operational direction and engagement of team/people through effective recruiting, selection, workflow/project planning, employee development, mentoring/coaching, and performance management to meet department and Sheridan-wide goals;
- Performing other duties, special projects and initiatives including participation on special projects and events as required and representing the department on college-wide and external committees.
