Are you passionate about fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for students from diverse backgrounds? San Diego State University is seeking a dynamic and visionary leader to join our team as the Director of the Center for Intercultural Relations (CIR).
DEPARTMENT SUMMARY
The mission of SDSU’s Community Centers is to support student success through a framework that addresses equity, justice, and inclusion. Centers facilitate the learning and growth of traditionally underserved students through programs and events that educate the campus; facilitation of intergroup dialogues to address pressing issues; and advocacy with campus stakeholders to create an institutional climate that supports the students served by the Centers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Ethnic Studies, Cultural Studies, or a related field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience
- 4 years of progressively responsible professional experience providing student services
- 4 years of experience promoting diversity and inclusion in higher education or a similarly complex organization
- Experience managing staff and/or student teams
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
- Considerable knowledge of student and leadership development theory, identity development models, group and individual behavior principles, and implications for practice.
- Documented experience developing and coordinating programs and events.
- Knowledge, sensitivity, and understanding of the social, political, personal, and cross-cultural needs of diverse students.
- Ability to collaborate and work with other units regarding issues of diversity and community.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with key senior management, faculty, and administrators regarding issues that impact students.
- Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and excellent judgment in responding to conversional, sensitive, and/or emotional issues and situations.
- Competency in cross-cultural communication.
- Experience participating in and leading movement(s) to create meaningful systemic change.
- Bilingual or multilingual preferred.
- Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advance notice.
Responsibilities:
- Leadership & Planning: Collaborate with the Assistant Vice President for Community and Belonging to provide strategic leadership and long-term planning for the CIR.
- Innovative Program Development: Lead efforts to create, implement, and evaluate programs aimed at enhancing outreach, retention, academic success, and leadership development for minoritized students.
- Strategic Vision: Shape the role of the CIR in supporting SDSU’s academic and public service mission through creative leadership and strategic planning.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the Division of Student Affairs, Division of Academic Affairs, Division of Diversity and Innovation, students, staff, and community partners to deliver impactful training, programs, and services.
- Multicultural Initiatives: Manage SDSU’s multicultural efforts, including multiracial and multiethnic initiatives, the Multicultural Learning Community, and support for other minoritized student groups.
