About the role
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Data Governance with strong technical expertise to lead our Data Governance initiatives. The Director of Data Governance is accountable to establish the overall Data Governance strategy for ATB while leading and managing organizational-wide Data Governance and Enterprise Content Management activities and will have a responsibility for the improvement, management and protection of all sensitive data and information assets.
The position will focus on establishing and ensuring adherence, and leading communications of ATB’s enterprise data governance framework for policies, standards and active practices at the Department, Business and Functional level to achieve the required level of consistency, quality and protection to meet overall business needs.
Accountabilities

Responsibilities of the Director of Data Governance:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive enterprise data governance program.
  • Develop and manage data governance and enterprise records/content management frameworks, policies, and procedures.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for data governance issues, facilitating resolution and ensuring effective communication.
  • Drive the adoption of data governance tools and technologies.
  • Develop and deliver training programs to promote data governance awareness and best practices.
  • Ensure alignment and integration of data governance practices across business and technical teams.
  • Work with business units to identify and prioritize data governance needs.
  • Identify and mature data and AI capabilities throughout the organization.
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with data governance policies and procedures.
  • Stay informed on the latest data governance trends and best practices.
  • Regularly engage with stakeholders to gather feedback, address concerns, and ensure alignment with data governance objectives.
  • Lead change management efforts to ensure successful adoption of data governance practices.
  • Identify and implement innovative data governance solutions that leverage new technologies and methodologies.
  • Develop and enforce a data ethics framework to ensure ethical use of data.
  • Conduct benchmarking against industry standards and best practices to continuously improve data governance practices.
  • Ensure compliance with data privacy regulations and relevant data protection laws.
  • Roll out and operationalize an enterprise-wide data regulatory compliance framework, with a focus on alignment with C27, BCBS 239, and other regulatory standards/best practices.
  • Define roles and responsibilities related to data regulatory and data protection and ensure clear accountability for stewardship with ATB data and business owners.
  • Ensure that new, updated, or changed data regulations are clearly defined, communicated, and understood.
  • Conduct recurring enterprise reviews and updates for all data regulatory with strategic internal and 3rd party partners.
  • Define and manage performance indicators and quality metrics and ensure compliance with regulatory policies, standards, roles and responsibilities, and adoption requirements.
  • Support senior management in achieving their objectives and resolve issues escalated from embedded data governance resources.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant data regulations and industry standards.
  • Develop and execute talent strategies in accordance with ATB’s People and Culture practices, including hiring pipeline, continuous learning, succession planning, and ATB’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Set SMART objectives for the team and individual team members, and ensure they are clear and continuously communicated and understood.
  • Manage performance by conducting performance reviews, delivering ongoing feedback, providing recognition and praise, and developing individual performance plans.
  • Communicate effectively, collaborate and share information across other groups within ATB, and create regular forums for sharing information among the team.
  • Effectively manage capacity through prioritization and delegation of work.
  • Track and report on progress toward goals and completion of work within target deadlines.
  • Take action to support teams through delivery challenges, through stakeholder management, dependency management, and problem solving.
  • Manage operating and investment budgets within set allocations and in accordance with methods and processes defined by Finance.

Skills, experience & requirements

Knowledge & Industry Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years of leadership experience in a major services organization, with large-scale data or project management and oversight experience.
  • Experience leading data governance initiatives (local and enterprise level).
  • Demonstrated consulting skills with change management concepts and strategies, including communication, culture change and performance measurement system design.
  • Strong technical background with expertise in data governance tools, enterprise content management platforms, and data management platforms .
  • Knowledge of enterprise and solution architecture frameworks and practices.
  • Knowledge of industry leading data quality and data protection management practices.
  • Knowledge of data governance practices, enterprise content management practices, business and technology issues related to management of enterprise information assets and approaches related to data protection.
  • Knowledge of data-related government regulatory requirements as well as emerging industry trends and issues.
  • Knowledge of risk data architecture and technology solutions.
  • Internally and externally recognized subject matter expert who effectively influences the way things are done.
  • Bachelors or Masters in Computer Science, MIS, or Information Management an asset
