Responsibilities:
AGENCY PURPOSE
The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is an independent statutory authority established by the Australian Government to maintain an impartial and independent electoral system for eligible voters through active electoral roll management, efficient delivery of polling services, and targeted education and public awareness programs.
The role is responsible for the strategic direction and management of the AEC’s education function, which includes both school-aged and adult learners. This includes:
- management of the National Electoral Education Centre, which has around 70,000 visitors a year (mostly schools).
- oversight of the development and delivery of education resources for schools and teachers on the Australian electoral system.
- expanding the school-based education offering to include digital delivery, and delivery of education to schools unable to attend the education centre in Canberra.
- adult community education to ensure inclusive and accessible education to support the electoral participation of Australia’s diverse communities, particularly for those who may experience barriers to participation. AEC conducts community education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, multicultural communities and people with disability
