Description:
POSITION SUMMARY:
The position of Director of EMEA Government Relations is an advocacy position responsible for ADM’s engagement on public policy relevant to ADM’s human, animal and pet nutrition businesses at the EU level and select EMEA markets (e.g., agriculture, climate / sustainability, health and nutrition, innovation / R&D, labelling, packaging, processing, safety and supply-chain / trade). The position will:
- Coordinate all ADM public policy advocacy on aforementioned issues, with input from and in collaboration with ADM business segments and functional groups (e.g., Communications, Regulatory & Scientific Affairs and Sustainability, among others).
- Plan, develop, implement and lead advocacy strategies and stakeholder engagement to influence on these issues, including through direct engagement with policy stakeholders and through trade associations.
- Educate policy stakeholders about ADM and the company’s human, animal and pet nutrition businesses, building a network of stakeholder relationships at the EU level and select EMEA markets.
- Provide support to ADM executives, including preparation for stakeholder and association meetings on these issues.
- Represent ADM in the relevant nutrition, food, and agriculture associations related to these issues.
To achieve this, the successful candidate must have experience working on agri-food issues as well as be interested in ADM’s business and what drives the company’s long-term corporate goals and near-term profitability.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead and coordinate advocacy and serve as a point of contact for internal stakeholders on public policy related issues impacting ADM’s human, animal and pet nutrition businesses.
- Work with ADM business segments, internal experts, issue management teams and functional groups (e.g., Regulatory & Scientific Affairs, Sustainability) to identify public policy issues, frame business impacts (opportunities /risks), provide strategic analysis, develop issue management plans and policy positions, develop and execute advocacy plans, and provide proactive updates to assess risks and opportunities and translate key developments into actionable intelligence to business leaders.
- Maintain an issues management roster for business leaders, provide oversight and strategic direction to association participation and staffing, and support executive visits to Brussels and key capitals in EMEA.
- Develop stakeholder engagement plans on these issues, coordinating and supporting meetings between ADM business management and policy stakeholders on aforementioned issues. Draft briefing memos and provide staffing to executives and/or key business leaders on these issues.
- Engage in public policy discussions to represent ADM and explain implications of public policy to the company and the broader sector.
- Manage ADM’s trade association participation on aforementioned issues.
- Track issue management through existing processes and key performance indicators (KPIs).
Requirements:
- Established network of stakeholders in Brussels (Member States a plus), including in government, public policy groups/think tanks, and associations related to agri-food issues.
- Advanced understanding of and experience with agri-food policy issues.
- Advanced expertise in issue management, advocacy and association management.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with a collaborative approach to working with colleagues across cultures and functional disciplines in a shared-success model.
- Experience in problem-solving when public policy issues arise, including proactive identification, framing and strategy development to address the risk or opportunity.
- Ability to credibly explain complex public policy issues to business stakeholders and ADM business to government officials and work to understand implications to the business.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with additional proficiency in other EMEA languages (e.g., French, German, Spanish).
- Demonstrated initiative and strategic thinking skills.
- Proven ability to manage complex portfolio, deadlines and executive visits.
- High ethical standards and personal integrity.
- Strong initiative, entrepreneurism, and strategic thinking.
- Minimum education required: undergraduate degree or advanced degrees.
- Minimum 7-10 years of relevant work experience, with private sector experience strongly preferred.
