Description:

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree preferred; however Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of academic preparation experience with First Peoples knowledge and/or community involvement will be considered.
  • 10 years minimum experience in leadership, Indigenous education program development and systems change
  • Technical Skills: Strong leadership, administration, and supervisory experience that encourage collaboration and a positive work environment, including demonstrated ability to interact, lead and participate in consultative decision making that respects people with a diversity of backgrounds, experiences and styles, while working collegially with a high degree of tact and diplomacy.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills: Proven leadership managing a team; conflict-resolution; ability to exercise mature judgement.
  • Advanced communication skills: Interpersonal, virtual and in person group facilitation and coordination, workshop creation and delivery. Advanced writing and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership in delivering excellent service to others as this is key in supporting the success of our students and our university community.
  • Excellent time management skills to handle competing deadlines and priorities with high attention to detail.
  • Flexibility in adapting to change and in participating in consultative decision-making processes.
  • First Peoples Knowledge:
    HISTORY: Knowledge of the history of First Peoples with Canada, specifically government relations, Residential Schools, treaties, and reserve systems is required.
    CULTURE: Cultural Knowledge, including, but not limited to, First Peoples traditional governance, social organization, customs, values and beliefs required.
    WORLDVIEW: Knowledge about paradigms/metaphysics that First Peoples utilize for reality structuring required. Examples include notions of constant flux, how we are all interrelated, holistic worldview.
    COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS: Experience working with Indigenous communities, including but not limited to: Chief and Councils, Elders, Leadership, First Nation owned corporations, societies, departments and entities, Metis and Inuit organizations,
    etc.
    BI-CULTURAL AND CROSS-CULTURAL EXPERIENCE: Knowledge of bi-cultural and cross-cultural experience required. Notions of two-eyed seeing; to live in both worlds.

LEGAL KNOWLEDGE:

Rudimentary knowledge of the laws specific to First Nations Peoples such as Indian Act, treaties, treaty rights, taxation, etc. required.

APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE:

Minimum requirement: 10 years of experience working in a leadership position in post-secondary education, specifically Indigenous Relations and/or experience working with Indigenous communities.
