About this opportunity:
The Director, Land and Joint Ventures is accountable for leading the Mineral & Surface Land and Joint Ventures functions for our upstream assets as well as collaborating closely with industry contacts, identifying and delivering business development initiatives in partnership with the business development team. This role is responsible for Land & Joint Venture related regulatory compliance, partner notices and contractual compliance to commercial agreements.
The ideal candidate for this role exhibits strong leadership, change management, collaboration and influencing skills. The successful candidate demonstrates a track record of execution excellence and alignment with the business to deliver value.
This position is located at our Corporate office in Calgary, Alberta.
What you’ll do:
- Manage land activities of the upstream organization, including acquisitions, lease administration, land and well data management, acreage reports, placement of bids at Crown sales, negotiation of farm-in and farm-out agreements and surface rights/access, and resolve legal disputes
- Monitor the performance of all land functions, including mineral land, surface land, asset optimization, land and small asset deals (
- Serve as a strategic partner to Cenovus leadership and internal customers by providing insights and recommendations
- Ensure all documentation is in legal compliance for in internal and external audits
- Participate in the identification and evaluation of business development activities and provide strategic guidance for complex and high-value acquisition and divestiture activity
- Ensure Land & Joint Venture related data integrity, reporting and dashboard visualization, and stewardship of Well and Land ecosystems
- Lead a team that handles joint interest negotiations for an extensive portfolio of wells and facilities
- Negotiate and oversee Joint Interest ownership activities with peer companies
- Responsible for ensuring business legal compliance to Joint Interest activities and Commercial agreements
- Promote innovation within the team and Cenovus by identifying and integrating appropriate technologies and good practices
- Own the short to mid-term (1-3 year) execution of functional strategy and the operational direction of the department
- Manage and control costs for the Land & Joint Venture department activities and handle well license applications and applicable regulatory requirements
- Demonstrate dedication to safety and environmental compliance in all job aspects
Who you are:
Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum requirements:
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
- Minimum of 20+ years of progressive experience with growing level of responsibility with an oil and gas organization
- Exposure and/or experience with land management, joint venture and joint interest practices is preferred
- Solid understanding of regulations, agreements and negotiations
- Strong financial competence in the selection of business opportunities and capital allocation
- Expert in managing complex contract negotiations with a consistent record of leading teams of Subject Matter Experts
- Demonstrated ability to influence and support peers to evaluate business opportunities provide economic evaluations and drive change
- Strong leadership competencies that include coaching, development of staff, and mentorship of individuals towards goal achievement
