SMH DIRECTOR OF NURSING

SMH is recruiting a Director of Nursing (DON), to join its executive management team to lead Service Area 4 and the Nursing function in delivering a professional and responsive service across the organisation. This is an exciting opportunity to join SMH and work in a challenging environment ensuring the delivery of professional standards, increased flexibility and greater efficiencies ensuring the achievement of workforce targets while maintaining excellent quality of care whilst also steering its strategic development and implementing its progressive vision for individualised, rights-based, integrated service delivery in the community.

ESSENTIAL ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA AND SKILLS:

  • Registered Nurse in ID with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) Registered or are eligible for registration, in the ID Division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland [NMBI] (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann).
  • Annual registration (i) On appointment practitioners must maintain live annual registration in the Intellectual Disability Division of the Register of NMBI
  • And (ii) Practitioners must confirm annual registration with NMBI to SMH by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC)
  • 10 years post registration ID nursing experience and 5 years nursing management experience at a minimum of Clinical Nurse Manager 2 (CNM 2) level of which 3 must have been in an ID setting immediately prior to the closing date for applications
  • A Master’s degree in nursing or related discipline.
  • Postgraduate training in Management.
  • Successfully completed a post registration programme of study, as certified by the education provider, which verifies that the applicant has achieved a National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) major academic Level 8 or higher award maintained by Quality & Qualifications of Ireland (QQI) or can provide written evidence from the Higher Education Institute that they have achieved the number of ECTS credits equivalent to a Level 8 or higher standard in a health care or management related area.
  • Possess the requisite clinical, leadership, managerial and administrative knowledge and ability for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.
  • Strong evidence of engaging in continuous professional development.
  • An in-depth knowledge of ID Service within a social care model.
  • A working knowledge of HIQA and Interim New Direction Standards.
  • Budget Management.

Responsibilities:

ROLE SUMMARY:

The DON will be responsible for an assigned number of designated centres in Service Area 4 (currently 21 centres), the Nurse Manager On Call (NMOC) service and for providing expert support and advice to the organisation and to nurses regarding nursing related issues. He / She will maintain regular contact with nurses in all parts of the organisation and support them in developing and implementing professional career development plans. The DON will, lead the development of all appropriate nursing policies and practices as required by SMH. They will have overall responsibility for nurse lead residential services (Service Area 4), and development and implementation of clinical governance systems for all nurses in the organisation. The DON will be an advocate for nursing within a changing and evolving organisation.
The DON will be responsible for the identification and implementation of nursing roles required to improve services to people with intellectual disability (ID), such as Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist and related roles.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The overall objective of this role is to manage Service Area 4 with an assigned number of residential designated centres, to manage the NMOC service and to provide nursing leadership and to provide a clear strategy and vision of the nursing function and role within SMH. Key Performance Indicators for this role will focus on the following areas: Leadership and Accountability, Service Development and Delivery and providing support and advice for management regarding Risk and Quality.
