Description:

SUMMARY OF THE JOB:

The Nursing Simulation Lab Director performs a full range of professional duties assisting colleagues with designing and implementing simulation curriculum (courses, content, and materials). This position works collaboratively to design and implement educational activities including curriculum development within a collaborative practice framework. This person will conduct an assessment of need, design curriculum for instruction, implement, teach simulation education classes and follow up with an evaluation of curriculum created. This person functions in the role of educator, facilitator, change agent, consultant, researcher, and leader.

EDUCATIONAL AND RESEARCH INITIATIVES:

  • Facilitates the use of simulation for education, performance improvement, research, and equipment evaluation.
  • Develops simulation scenarios in conjunction with other educators, nurses, and allied health providers to meet the educational needs of the learners and those of our external partnerships.
  • Manages and directs simulation activities.
  • Assures compliance with regulatory and professional standards.
  • Collects data on the effectiveness of simulation on student learning, critical thinking, and clinical decision making.
  • Develops methods to evaluate student and client satisfaction with departmental and simulation center programs.
  • Assures appropriate credentials are maintained in specialty areas/disciplines.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement, innovation, and development of initiatives for the integration of simulation in clinical education.
  • Investigates and submits proposals for potential grant opportunities to fund new simulation initiatives.
  • Creates and delivers professional presentations regarding all aspects of simulation to local, state, and national groups.
  • Serves as a consultant/resource regarding simulation issues for center.
  • Maintains records of student skills training according to approved policies.
  • Provide orientation of faculty, and students to principles of simulation training and debriefing techniques, and provide faculty with related literature.
  • Collaborates with IT Manager, Simulation Technicians to Program patient care simulators, prepare scenario props, and create scenario moulage (make-up) to model physiological responses to the clinical and skill objectives. Set up, operate, and manipulate patient care simulators, related media, and computer equipment.
  • Explains to students the use of patient care simulators, related media, and computer equipment that will be used during the simulation scenario.
  • Ensure student compliance with lab policies, procedures, and safety precautions.
  • Supports the short-, immediate, and long-term teaching, research of the University.
  • Supports the development of course curricula. Uses technical knowledge of Center capabilities and procedures to ensure that syllabi are accurate and appropriate.
  • Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients, and visitors.
  • Maintains professional knowledge.
  • Understand or willing to learn the use and operation of different simulator technologies ranging from anatomic models and task trainers to screen-based simulations to full body patient simulators and virtual reality surgical simulators.
  • Attend educational and technical workshops. Establish personal networks.
  • Benchmarking state-of-the-art practices. Participating in professional societies.
  • Assist with other special projects or initiates as needed. Communicate in a positive, professional manner with faculty, students and other users of the Center.
  • Other duties as assigned.
