Description:

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Director of Operations and Safety Officer plays a key role in enabling Smitty’s to achieve its vision of being seen as the best choice for quality Canadian-made furnishings and a better buying experience. You do this by leading our dedicated customer service, warehouse, and delivery teams to provide service excellence for our customers, and our showrooms, while ensuring the safe operation of our team members on all premises throughout the company.

Your Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • Degree or Diploma from a recognized university or college in Business, Operations, Retail Operations, or a related field
  • 10+ years of experience progressing in leadership roles
  • 5+ years in the home furnishings industry or related industry is preferred
  • Understanding of Occupational Health & Safety requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new software programs, familiar with ERP systems
  • Ability to use Microsoft products (Word, Excel, SharePoint etc.)
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal

Responsibilities:

Leadership:

Overall leadership responsibility for the activities of the shipping, receiving, delivery, customer service, facilities, and all safety protocols within the premises of the company:

  • Oversees management of all warehouse, drivers, and customer service team members in a manner consistent with the Company’s values and culture.
  • Develop and track KPI’s of all related strategic objectives set by the company.
  • Oversees HR processes with respect to the warehouse, drivers, and customer service team members, including but not limited to hiring, training, terminations, and performance reviews.
  • Promotes a healthy and safe work environment by enforcing health & safety policies, identifying and handling safety concerns at all premises.
  • Demonstrate commitment to valuing differences, developing, and coaching diverse teams, ensuring diverse perspectives are heard, encouraging everyone to have a voice and inviting opinions from all.
  • Support the sales teams by ensuring our showrooms have well-maintained, visually appealing facilities.
  • Maintain regular communication meetings with each team to ensure the efficient and timely flow of information.

Customer Service & Delivery

  • Responsible for the efficient, safe execution, and successful performance of all in-home deliveries and service.
  • Ensuring customer satisfaction by making the post-delivery process as positive and simple as possible.
  • Utilizing dispatch tools to optimize truck routes to achieve efficiency in delivery activities.
  • Provide guidance on day-to-day activities, responsible for developing and optimizing standard operating procedures.
  • Oversee the scheduling of incoming shipments and outgoing deliveries.
  • Overcoming delivery challenges by coordinating with customers, warehouses, delivery teams, and third parties.

Warehouse

  • Oversee the safe operation of all warehousing activities, overseeing maintenance of facility, equipment and vehicles and ensuring the safe operation of lift trucks, PPE and other equipment used.
  • Oversee the smooth operation of the warehouse including shipping, receiving, customer pickups, transfers.
  • Optimizing workflows for the receiving and storage of product in an efficient and orderly manner
  • Oversee for the incoming shipment product, and recovery of credits for related shipment damage within vendor policies.
  • Overseeing the loading of delivery vehicles and pre-delivery inspections.
  • Responsible for outside vendors that support shipping, warehousing and fleet management.

Fleet

  • Ensure that daily vehicle inspections are conducted and records are maintained.
  • Ensure regular maintenance is performed on all vehicles, responsible for the safe storage, operation and replacement of all vehicles.
  • Maintain ongoing fleet management systems and integration with ERP to enable successful tracking against KPIs.

Facilities

  • Provide and implement a schedule of regular and preventative maintenance within operational budget.
  • Ensure the warehouse and showroom facilities are AODA compliant and free of hazards.
  • Ensure regular safety protocols are implemented, monitored and practiced across all locations.
  • Ensure all facilities are aesthetically pleasing, well maintained, and free of debris.
  • Co-ordinate with showrooms with for moves, transfers, display set ups and general maintenance.
