At CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. To successfully perform the work, you’ll be on-site full-time.

How You’ll Succeed

  • Research & Analysis - As an Equity Research Analyst covering ESG, you are responsible for generating investment ideas, maintaining financial models and databases and researching fundamental quantitative and ESG factors that impact stock selection and sector rotation. The analysis and research cuts across a host of security types including (but not limited to) equities, fixed income, mutual funds and ETFs (i.e., business risk profile, strategic outlook, and industry analysis).
  • Client Focus – You will prioritize meeting our investor clients’ needs to support their investment process. The position provides the opportunity to liaise with our Sales and Trading teams, participate in conference calls and meeting with some of Canada’s largest investment managers.
  • Location and Reporting Lines – You can be based either in Toronto or Calgary, but ideally Toronto. By working with our fundamental analysts in both cities, you will develop relationships to better understand the ESG challenges and opportunities facing disparate sectors. Direct reporting responsibility will be to Dennis Fong, who heads up our Calgary office, but you will receive additional support from managing directors in Toronto who are extremely supportive of our ESG research.

Who You Are

  • You have attained relevant education and work experience. You have a University degree, along with an MBA, CPA or CFA, and have developed the technical skills required and established yourself as a valued contributor in the workplace.
  • You can demonstrate direct industry experience. Our preference is that the candidate has experience covering the ESG sector on the buy-side or sell-side and will be viewed as an asset. Ideally the candidate also has a strong understanding of the capital markets and of the shifting regulatory policies that govern macro ESG themes, environmental disclosure and Sustainability reporting.
  • You have excellent communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills to deal effectively with internal and external clients are a top priority, along with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Candidates require the ability to explain detailed financial and statistical analysis. You can write reports that succinctly present the relevant content from which an intelligent investor can make an informed decision.
  • You know that details matter. Excellent analytical and quantitative skills. Strong multi-tasking and time management skills. Ability to work independently in a deadline-oriented environment.
  • You’re motivated by collective success. You are a team player that wants personal success, but also to support the team, and the growth and development of each of its members. Candidates will liaise with sector analysts to help understand and predict the changing impact of ESG factors and regulations.
  • You are technically savvy. Excellent knowledge of PC applications (i.e. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, OneNote).
  • Values matter to you. You bring your real self to work, and you live our values – trust, teamwork and accountability.
