Description:

Position Overview
Reporting to the VP, Underwriting, the Director Underwriting assumes administrative and corporate tasks to meet the departmental objectives.
This is a staff management position to support RGA’s market presence as a leading provider of high quality and timely underwriting services. The incumbent will manage all levels of underwriters, as well as the contract underwriters and underwriting assistants.

Responsibilities

  • Accomplishing department objectives by managing staff; planning and evaluating department activities.
  • Manage processes within the underwriting department, in conjunction with the underwriting management team
  • Participate with the underwriting management team in developing underwriting approaches and procedures
  • Handle client related issues, underwriting complaints & manage escalated issues; use judgment to escalate issues to VP, Underwriting
  • Ensure that staff provide timely and responsive client service on a daily basis
  • Provide senior technical support to the underwriting team and clients
  • Co-sign cases and underwrite cases from underwriting queue
  • Communicating and motivating the team while establishing appropriate methods to evaluate job performance.
  • Manage, coach, monitor & mentor staff, including development of staff to progressive levels where appropriate
  • Perform management tasks, including hiring, training, evaluation, coaching and feedback
  • Work on special projects as needed
  • Present professional face of the Company to employees & clients
  • Work with RGA colleagues in all departments to support business development goals and to sustain RGA’s reputation for sound and professional client service
  • Participate in assigned client and industry events, including related travel when needed

REQUIREMENTS

  • College diploma / University degree or equivalent working experience
  • Minimum of 10 years of life underwriting experience
  • FLMI and FALU preferred, or other industry designations
  • Management experience, an asset
  • Insurance company experience, an asset
  • Reinsurance underwriting experience, an asset
  • Bilingual French/English (oral and written) is required given the need to communicate orally and in writing with a predominantly English-speaking clientele based outside of Quebec.

ABILITIES:

  • Advanced life insurance medical and financial underwriting skills
  • Has superior knowledge of current underwriting related developments in life insurance, reinsurance and retrocession including: competitiveness, products, medical, non-medical, financial trends, company relationships (internal and external)
  • Advanced knowledge of medical underwriting, the financial aspect and the law as applied in the evaluation of risk in life insurance
  • Has the capacity to read and comprehend a vast amount of medical, non-medical, financial information and make decisions based on the information at hand
  • Strong critical thinking skills, innovative and creative
  • Highly advanced ability to adapt new methods; work under tight deadlines and stressful conditions
  • Comfortable with managing multiple projects and priorities
  • Effective in collaborating with individuals across a wide variety of operational, functional and technical disciplines
  • Demonstrated persuasion and negotiation skills when working with internal/external customers to resolve issues/problems
  • Effective people management skills, demonstrating the ability to lead, mentor, and develop employees; including the ability to delegate key areas of responsibility
  • Intermediate Word, SQL/Query and Excel skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, in French and English, given the need to communicate orally and in writing with a predominantly English-speaking clientele based outside Quebec.
  • Ability to do client presentations
  • Ability to relate to staff and clients at all levels
  • Ability to travel as required
