Description:
Hemiko are recruiting for a District Heating Design Engineer reporting to the Country Manager.
The successful candidate will be to contribute to a range of pre contract project development activities required to move a potential project lead identified by the business development team through to a technically and commercially viable project bid and eventually contract execution.
We are looking for an enthusiastic Graduate Engineer with excellent energy engineering design, technical, and software skills who enjoys working collaboratively in dynamic multi-professional teams, assisting in all aspects of the delivery of projects from inception to completion to achieve outstanding results.
You will be able to show you have had recent experience in this design area and you will have a keen interest in the field of Energy Engineering Systems for domestic, commercial and industrial buildings. You will have a keen eye for detail and be technically proficient.
We will want you to join our journey toward a more environmentally and technically responsible and effective way of delivering energy systems, moving away from conventional processes into a more innovative and free-thinking environment.
ABOUT HEMIKO
Hemiko is a fast-growing innovative business which is looking to invest in and deliver over £1bn of heat network projects in the coming years. We fund, design, build, operates and maintain low carbon district energy networks and building energy systems. This work is for communities, towns, and cities. We work with local authorities, developers, house builders, and property owners.
We are looking to lead on town and city scale decarbonisation. We recognise that the decarbonisation of heating and the built environment is one of the least known and “solution clear” areas - this is where we are focused and where we will be deploying our investment and our resource.
We are an innovative, design and proactive intelligence led company, looking to attract people who think around a problem and past an issue. We want to be at the front end of commercial and technical innovation and are looking for team members to come on that journey.
Some of our current projects include:
- The design, installation, operating, and funding of a district heating system to serve 3,500 homes in Clapham as part of a major regeneration project.
- The design, installation, and operation of a new city centre wide low carbon district heating system for the City of Cardiff.
- The design, installation, and operation of a ground source heat pump system to provide heating and cooling to a new development of 300 homes a gym and office building in South London.
- The design and installation of a heat network in a rural community in Cambridgeshire to replace oil boilers in 300 homes with centralised low carbon heat generation.
- Developing detailed long-term decarbonisation plans for existing large scale district heating networks to allow them to transition from gas fired CHP led generation to low carbon generation.
Hemiko is absolutely committed to an honest and collaborative approach to all our work, always looking for better ways to do things and avoid the business curses of unnecessary complexity and silos.
We are a young, friendly business in the very rapidly growing low carbon energy sector, which provides significant opportunities for career flexibility and development. We focus on delivering bespoke solutions with positive outcomes for the communities we serve.

THE ROLE
Hemiko is seeking a highly flexible, self-starting, Graduate Engineer with experience in the design of District Heating Network including Mechanical Building Services. The location of the post will be Copenhagen. The role is to support the design and growth of heat network infrastructure in the UK, so you may also be expected to visit prospective and active construction sites throughout the UK from time to time, as necessary.
The nature of the business and our rapid growth means that the candidate has significant opportunity to develop their career in a friendly environment and progress as the company grows. We are looking to develop teams of engineers that will be able to grow into designing a variety of energy related systems. It is anticipated, therefore, that the candidate would be seeking to broaden their skills horizon.
This position will differ from conventional design responsibilities in that the Graduate Engineer will be given the opportunity to help ‘own’ design projects from inception through to operation. Following the handover to our Operations Team, the engineer will continue to monitor and evaluate feedback from the Operations Team to help refine and improve the design and all future designs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Participating on the design and delivery of new energy projects during the pre-construction and construction phases working with and supported by the wider Hemiko Team. In more detail this will include:
- Assist in the evaluation of project scope and design inception.
- Undertake hydraulic and thermal modelling of system through the use of software.
- Assist in the design and implementation of medium to large scale low carbon energy systems, heat distribution networks, controls, plant-rooms, thermal storage and fuel storage.
- The production of detailed drawings, reports and specifications.
- Surveying and evaluating existing buildings energy systems.
- Assist in the production of viability and feasibility reports of energy systems,
- Coordinating the work of others and coordinating work with engineers of other discipline
- Provide regular on and off-site evaluation to ensure design compliance during construction phase.
